WE’LL NEVER FORGET: Five Big Amodu Achievements

Still in mourning following the sudden death of former Super Eagles coach Stephen Keshi, Nigerians woke up on Saturday to more shocking news, this time the death of Shuaibu Amodu.

In Amodu's honour and ahead of his eighth day fidau prayers, Completesportsnigeria.com's JAMES AGBEREBI lists five proud coaching moments the former Nigeria head coach will always be remembered for…

WINNING THE 1990 CAF CUP WINNERS CUP WITH BCC LIONS

After Shooting Stars of Ibadan and Enugu Rangers won the CAF Cup Winners Cup in 1976 and 1977 respectively, BCC Lions became the third Nigerian club to achieve the feat in 1990.

In charge of the Gboko-based side was Shuaibu Amodu, who led them to a 4-1 aggregate win against Club Africain of Tunisia.

Unfancied BCC Lions won the first leg 3-0 in Lagos before going to Tunisia to force Club Africain to a 1-1 draw.

FIRST INDIGENOUS COACH TO QUALIFY SUPER EAGLES FOR THE WORLD CUP

After years of disappointment, the Super Eagles finally qualified for the FIFA World Cup which was held in USA in 1994.

The mastermind of the Eagles qualification for her first ever World Cup appearance was Dutch coach Clemence Westerhof.

French coach, Philippe Troussieur, emulated Westerhof's feat by guiding the Eagles to the France 1998 World Cup.

And when qualification for the Korea/Japan 2002 World Cup looked like fading away, Amodu replaced Jo Bonfrere and engineered a remarkable turnaround to eventually secure the World Cup ticket for Nigeria, becoming the first ever indigenous coach to achieve that feat.

QUALIFYING NIGERIA FOR THE 2010 WORLD CUP

Just like in 2002, the Eagles almost didn't qualify for the 2010 FIFA World Cup which was held in South Africa.

Going into the last group game away to Kenya trailing leaders Tunisia by two points, the Eagles needed to win and hope Tunisia slipped up away to Mozambique.

But once again, Amodu wielded his magic wand by leading the Eagles to a 3-2 win in Kenya, their only away win during the qualifiers, while Tunisia lost 1-0 to Mozambique.

The Eagles eventually made it to South Africa 2010, their fourth World Cup appearance.

FIRST MAN TO COACH THE EAGLES AT THE FIFA CONFEDERATIONS CUP

Amodu's first major assignment for the Eagles after taking over in 1994 was the 1995 FIFA Confederations Cup, where they were grouped with Argentina and Japan.

In the first game against Japan, goals from Samson Siasia, Mutiu Adepoju and Daniel Amokachi sealed a convincingly 3-0 win for the Eagles.

A 0-0 draw against Argentina in their second group game, ended the Eagles' hopes of advancing into the final.

And in the third place match against Mexico, the Eagles lost 5-4 on penalty shootout after regulation time ended 1-1.

THIRD FOREIGN COACH TO HANDLE ORLANDO PIRATES IN THEIR HISTORY

After leaving the Eagles job, Amodu was appointed head coach of South African giants Orlando Pirates for the 1996/1996 season.

Amodu followed in the foot steps of Russia's Viktor Bondarenko and Joe Frickleton from Scotland, as the first three foreign coaches to handle Orlando Pirates.
