Arsene Wenger has described Arsenal's season as a disappointment.
Arsenal will finish the season empty-handed after another futile attempt at winning the English Premier League title.
In his pre-match press conference on Friday ahead of their final game of the season against relegated Aston Villa, Wenger stated that Arsenal's target now is to finish ahead of Tottenhah Hotspurs who are currently second on the log.
"It was a strange season and we finish
disappointed. We had a chance to win the title and we are frustrated. It is a missed opportunity. Leicester had consistent results and everybody else had ups and downs. We want to finish as high as possible and in front of Spurs. Ideally, we want to get in front of them," Wenger stated.
Wenger rued the spate of injuries that ravaged his players in the course of the season but posited that it would have been difficult to find quality replacements for the injured players in January.
"I look at myself and what I could have done. Which decisions did I not get right? Welbeck was out for a long time, Cazorla was out for five months, Coquelin out for four months. Elneny and Iwobi have done well but you don’t find players available in January – who could have strengthened."
Wenger also expressed sadness following reports that Welbeck will be out for nine months.
"We are all devastated and very sad – the whole team.
"It is surprising news I expected for him to miss the Euros but to be out for such a long time . We will support him and I have a secret hope it could be shorter."
Ahead of the game against Aston Villa, Wenger revealed that Mezut Ozil and Jack Wilshere are available for selection, while ruling out Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain
" Ozil is back in training.‘Chamberlain is not back but from Sunday I think everybody else should be available."
"He can start. He played 75 minutes against Man City. I haven’t decided yet but there is no reason why he shouldn’t be considered. Let’s hope until the start of the Euros it goes well."
On the future of Mikel Arteta, Tomaz Rosicky and Mathieu Flamini, Wenger said:"Mikel Arteta has been a great leader. All these players we have a decision to make. Do they continue as a player or become a coach. Tomas Rosicky has been here for 10 years, Flamini has been a leader on and off the pitch. One or two of them could play on Sunday."
And on reports about about a new two-year deal for him at Arsenal: "It is completely wrong. I don’t know where this comes from. You can treat that as an invention. It is absolutely false. They could have checked with the club and it would have been denied. I think about the next game. I have full commitment for as long as I am under contract."Jiji.ng the cheapest online shopping in Nigeria Exposed!!! How I make 120,000 monthly on UBER without owning my own car.
