Wenger Vs Mourinho: War Of Words After 12 Encounters

Arsenal take on Chelsea on Sunday and Arsene Wenger will be determined not to make it an unlucky 13 games without victory over Jose Mourinho.

The Portuguese’s record against his old adversary, who he infamously labelled ‘a specialist in failure’ reads 12 matches, seven wins, five draws and no defeats.

Arsenal 2-2 Chelsea, EPL, Dec 12, 2004
Wenger: ‘Everyone has an opinion but the only one that counts is the opinion of the referee.’
Mourinho: ‘Unhappy is a nice word because I cannot say the word I have in my heart or in my soul. I don’t want to speak about it because if I do, maybe I will have to go to the FA or pay out some money instead of spending it on Christmas gifts.’

Chelsea 0-0 Arsenal, EPL, April 20, 2005
Mourinho: Sent Steve Clarke to face the press.
Wenger: ‘They will be champions unless someone puts a bomb here. There should be a huge accident for them not to be champions.’

Arsenal 1-2 Chelsea, Community Shield, Aug 7, 2005
Wenger: ‘Chelsea were dangerous with the long balls, they were very direct and we tried more to play our usual game. I’m not here to judge Chelsea’s game, they play their game and we play ours. I just feel that Drogba gave us a hard time on the long balls, but that’s not a criticism.’
Mourinho: ‘I’m happy with the spirit and the quality of our game – we are going in the right direction again.’

Chelsea 1-0 Arsenal, EPL, August 21, 2005
Mourinho: ‘I don’t want to say we deserved it because the goal was a lucky one but I saw two teams very equal in their performance, organization and approach to the game.’
Wenger: ‘We lacked incisiveness. We tried to build the game and Chelsea sucked us in.’

Arsenal 0-2 Chelsea, EPL, December 18, 2005
Wenger: ‘Essien was a straight red in my opinion. He did not play the ball, he played the player.’
Mourinho: ‘I think he (Essien) deserves to be looked at as a great player and be careful of other teams’ reactions in relation to him. That for me is the negative point.’

Chelsea 1-1 Arsenal, EPL, December 10, 2006
Mourinho: ‘I accept the draw but it was a bit of a surprise that a team 15 points behind the leader came here not to win, to go for the draw, it’s almost saying we don’t want to win the Premiership.’
Wenger: ‘We tried to win the game and nearly did that. I knew the final part of the game would be difficult for us physically, but when you get so close to winning of course you want to keep it going.’

Chelsea 2-1 Arsenal, League Cup final, February 25, 2007
Mourinho: ‘A special word for them – they played very good. They are a great coach, great players – but football is about winning and the cup goes to us.’
Wenger: ‘It was a good game and that was an incident of one minute. But we do not want to behave like we behaved and that is it.’

Arsenal 1-1 Chelsea, EPL, May 6, 2007
Wenger: ‘The sending off changed the game, for the bad, not for the good as I would’ve liked my team to be tested for ninety minutes, eleven against eleven.’
Mourinho: ‘I am more proud of my team today than when we have won the title in the last two years. I love them even more for what they have given.’

Arsenal 0-2 Chelsea, League Cup, October 29, 2013

Arsenal 0-0 Chelsea, EPL, December 23, 2013
Wenger: ‘Overall, they were happy with a point and we weren’t. But we couldn’t take our few chances we created.’
Mourinho: ‘I think boring is a team that plays at home and cannot score a goal. That’s boring. Because you go to your stadium and you fill your stadium, in weather like we had on Monday, to see victories.’

Chelsea 6-0 Arsenal, EPL, March 22, 2014
Mourinho: ‘We came to kill – and in ten minutes we destroyed, It was ten amazing minutes and with ten minutes you can win the game. i’m so happy with the approach.. After that, easy.’
Wenger: ‘This is my fault, We got a good hiding. You don’t prepare all week to experience that.’

Chelsea 2-0 Arsenal 0, EPL, October 5, 2014
Mourinho: ‘For me, it is over. But the technical area is very clear – I have mine, he has his and he cannot come to mine, especially to put pressure on the referee to give a red card to my player. So I just told him “leave my technical area and don’t come back please”.’
Wenger: ‘I wanted to go from A to B and somebody confronted me in between without any sign of welcome. B was Sanchez, to see how badly he was injured.’
