Zambia Coach Blames Defenders For Nigeria Defeat, Targets 15 Points

Zambia coach Wedson Nyirenda believes that his side still stand a chance of qualifying for the 2018 World Cup in Russia despite their opening day 2-1 defeat to the Super Eagles of Nigeria, reports Completesportsnigeria.com.

First half goals from Alex Iwobi and Kelechi Iheanacho handed the Super Eagles their first win away from home in two years and also condemned the Chipolopolo to their first-ever defeat at the Levy Mwanawasa Stadium.

Algeria were forced to a 1-1 draw at home to Cameroun later on Sunday to leave Nigeria on top of their qualifying group.

“We have lost three points at home and this is not very good for us, but football being what it is it can go either way when you are careless. That is the lesson we have learnt,” Nyirenda told Zambia Post.

"But I want to say that the defenders were today jittery and unsettled. Maybe the stage was big but it happens in football.

“We are still in the race, we are not out.

He added: “Going forward, we still have 15 points to fight for, which we will fight for. You will need about 10 points to qualify for the World Cup, so we still have a chance.”.

“We are in a rebuilding phase, we are building a new team and at the same time we want to qualify (for the World Cup), so Zambians have to be patient as we have new players who are trying to integrate with the old players.”
