Rohr Renews Interest In Ademola Lookman

Super Eagles head coach, Gernot Rohr, is still keen on persuading Everton’s Ademola Lookman to play for the three-time African champion.

The 21-year-old helped England win the 2017 FIFA U-20 World Cup, but can switch allegiances as he is yet to play for the senior side.

Lookman was born in England but qualifies for Nigeria through his parents. He has been a target for them for two years.

“He plays for the youth now but we hope he can change his mind and play for us,” Rohr told BBC Sport.

“He’s a player we know can add something to the team.

“Getting a player to change his national choice is not easy, quick and the process is never so straightforward.

“First we must be sure he wants to come. And hope to get it cleared by Fifa.

“Then the most important part is that he brings something new, different and better than we have.”

Nigeria have previously succeeded in convincing several former England youth internationals like Sone Aluko, Victor Moses, Shola Ameobi, Alex Iwobi and Ola Aina to switch international allegiance.

Liverpool’s Sheyi Ojo also told the BBC that he would love to represent Nigeria if they approach him.

Should Lookman opt for Nigeria, he would face competition from Ahmed Musa, Moses Simon, Henry Onyekuru and Samuel Kalu for a place in the current squad.

“Every coach wants options, we’ve been lucky to get some players and if we get him, Lookman will give us more options,” Rohr explained.

“But we have to be careful about how we go about this because Nigeria have some good players at home and playing outside.”

Lookman scored 12 goals in 49 games for Charlton before joining Everton in January 2017.

He played on loan at German club RB Leipzig last season but has struggled for regular game time this season.

  • Haruna is a more exciting player than the Tammy Abraham guy. He’ll offer greater depth upfront and should be a good backup to Ighalo or vice versa (I think the wings are well covered). With his addition, as well as other talents like Chukwueze, Odey, Seyi Ojo and maybe Osimhen to the SE, we should have no rival in Africa.

Why do you always comment without read the article. We are talking about lookman not Abraham

      • You’re with me to know I only read the headlines? Did I say the story was about Tammy? What kind of useless wild assumption is that? If you didn’t know, making that sort of comparison is called adding a perspective to the story.

If I wrote the story above, I’ll add that angle as they’re inherently related and there’s a common denominator. Look below the story, do you see the section called “Related Stories”, it’s an automated AI-generated list of related story from the site history. If it was extended, you’d probably have a Tammy in there.

I’ve never made a single comment without reading every single word and understanding it. Why are some people just naturally aggressive and provocative? You repeated waffle twice, yet it’s just waffle, of no significance and just occupying space. What’s your point? You just read only and have no point. And if you ever comment, it’s only to attack regular contributors? So you just wanted to attack without a reason. My friend, be careful here please. Don’t tip me off. I’ll maul you like a Tiger without mercy!

Please, spell check your composition before posting here. Thanks.

Aha, what is with you and spell check? You be English teacher or wetin? Spell check…… Make your contribution on the news so we know how bright or dull that you are rather than spell checking up and down the land like a village headmaster.

          • @Ashy Ashy, people like the Israel guy above, Jones, Sam and Jonah something (I suspect they are one person using different IDs) do the least compositions, make little or no sense and attack other people here in order to get noticed. They don’t say much because they really don’t have any meaningful contributions to make, but also because they don’t want to expose their inadequaccies by typing more than a line or two. Most people know CSN comment pluggin doesn’t have the edit function and this place is not an essay competition arena. Quality contibutors don’t pay attention to such trivials. They pick the message in the commentary and move on or give their own angle to the issue in discourse.
Petty people like the Israel dude will rather leave the message and attack the messenger. Such childish behaviour that gives you an idea of the person in real life. Yet they can’t write more than one or two sentences or provide an intelligent analysis of their own. CSN comment mederators should please take note of and censor those who delight in attacking others here and using foul language.

        • So what’s the spell check problem here @Israel? “Tick off”? Or which one? Why not face front if you got nothing to say or simply read quietly and pass? People come here to read CSN stories, as well as other informed and interesting perspectives on the story by mature and knowledge people on football matters, not monitoring honest spelling errors. Write 5 lines of quality contibution and let’s see…

      • Jones (never seen the ID before here), make your on-point contribution and let’s see it before condemning others. I write regularly and even have to vet what other people write, sometimes in lengthy and bulk submissions; and you tell me I don’t read? Like I said, don’t try that nonsense again, or I’ll have you mangled like a grizzly on a deer.

        • Jones, it’s a bad habit and a sign of immaturity to attack people’s comment or make wild assumptions without provocation. If you disagree with a submission, say it in the most polite way you can. This is an anonymous forum, stop talking down on people you don’t know!!

There are people that do so here too, but it’s a bad habit. On more than one occasion, I have mentioned in reply to someone that they missed or are mixing the name of a player with another one. Draw a line between making your point and a personal attack. BigD makes a lot of points and corrections, but you’ll never catch him throwing mud at anyone. Haruna and Tammy, there’s a relationship, if you didn’t read past stories or have no idea how they belong to the same English-groomed youngsters of Nigerian heritage.

Some these players can play in U-23 before thier maturity to become SE players.

      • Yep, we have options all over the pitch now. We do not need foreign bred players in areas that we have plenty of cover. We should only be bringing in players to positions that we need strength in depth or in order to push competition where we only have one player covering.

As such our primary focus needs to be central striker, attacking central midfielder (10) and goal keeper.

These boys need their desire tested. Lookman, Sheyi, etc need to be placed with the under 23s to see how they can fit in if required. Same Osimhen, Nwakali, Okonkwo, Chukwueze, Musa all populate the under 20 if they meet the age cut off and under 23 if they don’t.

They can get valuable experience if they ensure that the under 20, under 23 follow the same tactics, format and structure of the senior team. That was they can master the positional play and tactics so that if they are required they just slot in knowing already the system that they need to follow.

We have plenty of options already in the senior team, time to build up the options in the youth teams

  • Mr. Rohr pls keep it up. We need this guy in our super eagles. Lookman and seyi Ojo will bring something great to the super eagles. Lookman is far better than Kalu.
We also need Philip Billing and Eze in our super eagles midfield
