Nigeria's chances of being drawn in a World Cup 'group of death' this summer has increased dramatically after their shocking ouster from the African Cup of Nations qualifiers, Completesportsnige
The Super Eagles failed to beat the Pharaohs of Egypt over two legs in the last five days thereby missing out on the AFCON for a second consecutive time.
The Super Eagles who made the World Cup finals five consecutive times are likely face a tougher battle qualifying for the 2018 edition in Russia if they are pitted against Egypt again when the draw is staged in June, with a lowly FIFA ranking and a dispirited team.
Progressing to the Mundial, the Super Eagles side could well draw Algeria, Cape Verde, Cote D Ivoire, bitter rivals Ghana, and Tunisia in Pot 1 should the FIFA rankings be used by CAF to seed teams.
And will also get either of Cameroun, Congo, DR Congo, Egypt and Senegal in Pot 2.
As things stand, Nigeria are 62nd ranked team in the world and on this count, they will fall in pot 3 of seeds along with Guinea (63), Uganda (67), South Africa (70) and Mali (73).
The final rankings before the draw will be released early next month, allowing the Super Eagles to know which of the five pots they will be pooled in for the draw.
A team from each pot will be picked out to form a qualifying group of five teams with the overall winners advancing to the World Cup in Russia. The draw for the final group stage qualifying will take place in Cairo on June 24.
