There was flurry of goals from Nigerian players over the weekend spread across the world: in Asia, Europe and America. Completesportsnigeria.com’s JOHNNY EDWARD highlights the top five Nigerian stars that bagged braces for their respective clubs…
Emmanuel Emenike (Al Ain):
After firing blanks in his first five games for his new club Al Ain of the United Arab Emirates, Emmanuel Emenike scored twice as Al Ain beat Al Nasr 4-2 to win this year’s UAE Super Cup.
Currently on loan from Turkish club Fenerbache, the 28-year-old forward was on target in the fourth minute for Al Ain’s opener and he completed his brace in the 72nd minute.
Only the previous week, Emenike helped his club clinch another trophy in Morocco.
Obafemi Martins (Seattle Sounders): Nigerian Obafemi Martins made a grand return to action for Seattle Sounders firing a brace in his side’s 4-0 win over Orlando City.
Martins had missed the last nine games in the United States Major League Soccer but took his tally to nine goals in the league. He was even denied a hat-trick in the encounter after missing a penalty.
The striker finished off a brilliant feed from Lamar Neagle in the 17th minute for his side’s opener.
He however added his second of the day in the 62nd when he chipped the ball over the Orlando ‘keeper before running it down and putting the ball into the net, giving the Sounders a 3-0 lead.
The former Levante star has four assists in just 12 games for Sounders and is shortlisted for the MVP of the week award.
Blessing Eleke (Nova Gorica):
Nigerian striker Blessing Eleke scored his second brace of the season in the Slovenian League to maintain his side Gorica’s top spot on the log following their 3-2 win at Domzale on Saturday.
That feat shot the former Flying Sports player to the Slovenian top scorers’ chart with five goals.
The 19-year-old scored in the fifth minute to give Gorica a 1-0 lead before completing his brace in the 57th minute to make it 2-1. Gorica lead the table with 15 points from six games.
Ezekiel Henty (Olimpija Ljubljana):
Former AC Milan primavera striker, Ezekiel Henty, was not left out of the weekend brace fiesta as he closed the gap on top of goal scorers’ chart in Slovenia with his brace in Olimpija Ljubljana’s 3-0 win at Maribor on Sunday.
Henty scored in the fifth minute to give his team a 1-0 lead and added a second in the 27th minute for his team to lead 2-0.
Henty is now the second leading scorer with four goals alongside Luka Prasnikar of Rudar one shy of Eleke’s five strikes.
Kayode Olanrewaju (Austria Wien):
Former Flying Eagles forward, Olanrewaju Kayode, also hit a brace for his Austrian club Austria Wien who pummeled Mattersburg 5-1 on Saturday.
