Nigeria’s Super Eagles will be meeting Tanzania in Saturday’s 2017 Africa Cup of Nations Group G qualifier in Uyo, Akaw Ibom State.
Pride will be the only the thing at stake as both teams have crashed out of the 2017 AFCON, losing the group’s ticket to Egypt.
In seven past meetings, Nigeria are yet to lose to Tanzania. Ahead of this weekend’s clash, Completesportsnigeria.com’s JAMES AGBEREBI takes a look at these past meetings and how they panned out…
TANZANIA 0-0 NIGERIA (1972, INTERNATIONAL FRIENDLY MATCH)
Nigeria and Tanzania first crossed paths in 1972 in an international friendly match played in Dar es Salam.
The encounter ended goalless.
NIGERIA 2-1 TANZANIA (1973, ALL AFRICA GAMES, GROUP STAGE)
At the 1973 All Africa Games hosted in Lagos, Nigeria were drawn in Group A alongside Ghana, Algeria and Tanzania in the football event.
Nigeria beat bitter rivals Ghana 4-2 and were held to a 2-2 draw against Algeria.
To guarantee passage into the semi-finals, Nigeria needed to avoid defeat in their last group game against Tanzania.
Qualification into the last four was guaranteed as Nigeria won 2-1 and progressed with Ghana.
Nigeria eventually won the football gold following their 2-0 win against Guinea in the final.
NIGERIA 3-1 TANZANIA (1980 AFCON, GROUP STAGE)
Nigeria got the nod to host the 1980 Africa Cup of Nations and were in the same group with Tanzania, Cote d’Ivoire and Egypt.
The first game of the tournament was between Nigeria and Tanzania which Nigeria won 3-1.
The late Muda Lawal, Ifeanyi Onyedika and Segun Odegbami scored for Nigeria, while Juma Mkambi got Tanzania’s only goal.
And for the very first time, Nigeria were crowned AFCON champions after a 3-0 win against Algeria in the final.
NIGERIA 1-1 TANZANIA (1982 WORLD CUP QUALIFIER, 1ST LEG, 2ND ROUND)
The second round of the 1982 FIFA World Cup qualifiers saw Nigeria square up against Tanzania.
In the first leg played in Lagos, Tanzania surprisingly held Nigeria to a 1-1 draw.
TANZANIA 0-2 NIGERIA (1982 WORLD CUP QUALIFIER, 2ND LEG, 2ND ROUND)
In the reverse fixture, Nigeria triumphed 2-0 to advance into the third round 3-1 on aggregate.
Nigeria saw off Guinea in the third round but were stopped from qualifying for their first ever World Cup after Algeria knocked them out 4-1 on aggregate in the final qualifying round.
NIGERIA 2-0 TANZANIA (2002, INT’L FRIENDLY MATCH)
Nigeria and Tanzania did not face each other again until 2002 in an international friendly game in Nigeria.
At the end of proceedings, Nigeria overcame their visitors 2-0 to continue their impressive record against the East African country.
TANZANIA 0-0 NIGERIA (2017, AFCON QUALIFIER, 1ST LEG, GROUP G)
The last time Nigeria met Tanzania was in the first leg of group G 2017 AFCON in Dar es Salam which ended 0-0.
Both teams will not be at next year’s AFCON as Egypt have picked the group’s sole ticket.
The other team in the group, Chad, pulled out of the qualifiers on financial grounds.
