6 Likely Fringe/New Eagles To Vie For Spots In Rohr’s AFCON 2019 Squad

6 Likely Fringe/New Eagles To Vie For Spots In Rohr’s AFCON 2019 Squad

With reports that Super Eagles head coach, Gernot Rohr is set to drop some players from the World Cup squad for some fresh legs ahead of next month’s 2019 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Seychelles, Completesportsnigeria.com’s ADEBOYE AMOSU looks at six players who could be invited for the game for chance to impress and earn regular roles in the team.

ADELEKE AKINYEMI (IK Start, Norway)

The young striker made a name for himself, after bagging seven goals for his former Latvian club, Ventspils in the UEFA Europa League before joining Norwegian club, IK Start. He is currently the hottest Nigerian striker in Europe.

Super Eagles head coach, Gernot Rohr had a closer glimpse of the 20-year-old during the second leg of Ventspils second qualifying round clash against Bordeaux where he was also on target.
There are reports that Rohr is seriously considering handing him a maiden call-up to the Super Eagles for the game against Seychelles.

HENRY ONYEKURU (Galatasaray, Turkey)

Henry Onyekuru was called-up a couple of times by Gernot Rohr in the past. Injury ruled him out of staking claim for a place in the team ahead of the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia.

The former KAS Eupen player joined Galatasaray on loan from English Premier League club, Everton early in the summer and had an impressive pre-season outing with the club scoring thrice and grabbing one assist in five games.
He could be handed a chance to prove worth against Seychelles.

KELECHI NWAKALI (FC Porto, Portugal)

The former Golden Eaglets captain showed class in Nigeria’s Team B clash against Atletico Madrid at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in May with many calling for his inclusion in the World Cup bound team which was impossible at the time with the 30-man provisional list already submitted to FIFA.

A maiden call-up to the main Super Eagles now look to be on the card for the young midfielder who will spent the season on loan with Porto from Arsenal.

OLA AINA (Torino, Italy)

He missed out on a place in Nigeria’s squad to the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia as he was one of the seven players dropped from the 30-man provisional list.

A long term injury to Be7nfica defender , Tyronne Ebuehi may see him get a call-up for the game against Seychelles.

He will spent the season on loan at Italian club, Torino from Chelsea.

SAMUEL KALU (Bordeaux, France)

The Bordeaux winger is said to be highly rated by Gernot Rohr. With Victor Moses not available for selection again following his decision to quit international football and Moses Simon injured, Kalu might get the chance to make the squad for the Seychelles game.

ISAAC SUCCESS (Watford, England)

The former junior international seems to be back to his usual best following his battle with injuries and loss of form for the past two seasons.

He had a good pre-season with Watford and featured as a substitute in their season opener against Brighton last week.

Ordinary this is an interesting topic of discuss but with Fifa’s ban looming just two days away the desire for this discuss is zero and I feel its the same for other forum members.
Giwa and Dalung are unrelenting and unpatriotic.
Let’s wait and see if there would be a twist within 48hours otherwise discussing this article is needless.
    God bless Nigeria

    • Hey Greenturf my mate, you know I can’t resist myself to write a feature on such a topic even in the wake of some criticisms that have come my way recently. I hope we avoid a FIFA ban, if I think of something more to add in the course of the day, then I shall be back.

      For now, peace-out, one love.

As @Greenturf said, discussing this matter is kinda needless considering the fact that some Un-patriotic Nigerians want the downfall of football over their selfish interest and therefore bring unto us FIFA BAN.

So-called “fresh legs” must be better than “old legs”. Gernot Rohr spent the last years crying and giving excuses that the Super Eagles were very young and inexperienced. Eventually he took the youngest team to the World Cup in Russia, and nothing came out of it. Now he’s scouting for yet younger players. A good coach must set his mind firmly on selecting the best players irrespective of age.

pls permit me to express my total dismay over Chris Giwa and Solomon Dalung’s attitude toward Nigeria football, what exactly is their problem? As for Chris Giwa,he is under ban for five years, what did he want,to ruin Nigeria’s football? As for Dalung, you called him learned gentleman,i personally did not see the gentleman in him talk of being learned, sincerely speaking they should go and sit down, any way(48hrs is not too far)Fifa is coming

  • Age is not a problem Pls.since okocha and kanu left we have not yet recovered from the vacuum.some people have good body even at 50,they still remain strong while some at 27yr Look weak and feeble .eagles at USA 1994 were advanced;likes of keshi, nwanu, yekini,okafor,emenalo,okechukwu,etc.but the achieved what no generation has achieved. Fans must be patient. Do expect victory every time.
