Nigerian table tennis players, Aruna Quadri and Funke Oshonaike, have both qualified for the 2016 Rio Olympic Games after their semi-final berths at the All Africa Games in Brazzaville, Congo.
According to the Africa Table Tennis Federation, Quadri who will be making his second appearance at the Olympics after his debut at London 2012, defeated Egypt’s Ahmed Saleh 4-1 in the quarter-final.
Quadri will take on another Egyptian, Khalid Assar, in the semi-final. Assar beat Nigeria’sOjo Onaolapo in the quarter-final.
On her part, Oshonaike saw off Egypt’s Yousra Helmy 4-2 to set up a semi-final clash with Nadeen El-Dawlatly also from Egypt.
This will be Oshonaike’s sixth appearance at the Olympics after she debuted at Atlanta ’96.
She has now equalled Segun Toriola as the two Nigerian table tennis players with the most number of appearances at the Olympics.
The semi-finals and the final of the singles event come up on Saturday 19 September.
