Agbo In Action As Standard Liege Lose Belgian Super Super Cup To Club Brugge

By Adeboye Amosu:

Nigerian defender, Uche Agbo, ended on the losing side as Standard Liege fell to a 2-1 defeat to Club Brugge in their Belgian Super Cup tie at the Jan Breydelstadion on Sunday, reports Completesportsnigeria.com.

Club Brugge’s Nigerian  forward, Emmanuel Denis didn’t play in the game due to injury.

Centre-back Agbo featured for the entire 90 minutes in the game.

Hans Vanaken put Club Brugge ahead in the 39th minute, while Wesley Ferreira da Silva doubled his side’s lead two minutes before  the break.

Standard Liege were handed a lifeline when Edmilson Junior reduced the deficit four minutes from the break.

Michel Preud’homme’s men  however failed to find an equaliser until the end of the game.

Agbo made 35 league appearances for Standard Liege last season and scored one goal, while Dennis featured in 30 league games and hit the back of the net seven times.

  • Uche Agbo and Mikel Agu have one thing in common which is: time and time again they get invited to the national team only to get meagre game time, if any, leading some fans to refer to them as nothing more than training materials (which I think is derogatory).

Such treatments have led to players like Fernando Adi and Nosa Igiebor vowing never to honour national team invitations that do not come with a guarantee of playing time

Speaking after the humiliation he felt for languishing on the bench in a world cup qualifier, Nosa Igiebor was quoted as saying :“It’s true I’m no longer interested in playing for Nigeria as long as Rohr remains the coach. He disrespected me.

He (Rohr) treated me like I’m nobody, I won’t honour any more calls unless if he assures me that I will play. ”

It will be a shame if Uche Agbo feels discouraged about future call-ups.

The Kano born defender is versatile at the back, focused and appears to have a good attitude.

Unfortunately, it is in attack and creative midfield that shortage exist in the Super Eagles at the moment, not defence.

That said, if Rohr stays, I suggest he only extends invitations to players he intends to give reasonable game time to unless, more of them will be just as disgruntled as Igiebor.
