Agu Relishes Appearance For Super Eagles Against Uganda Cranes

By Johnny Edward:
Super Eagles midfielder Mikel Agu is thrilled to have made his first start for the Super Eagles after he was left out of the Super Eagles squad to the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia, reports
Completesportsnigeria.com.

Agu was dropped from the Super Eagles World Cup squad alongside Ola Aina for the final list, but his impressive showing for Vitoria de Setubal earned the 25-year-old combative midfielder a recall to the national team.

The former Bursaspor star played all 90 minutes in Nigeria’s international friendly against Uganda and was unlucky not to have scored in the encounter. It was his seventh appearance for the Super Eagles since he made his senior national team debut against Togo in an international friendly.

“It was a great feeling to wear again this green white jersey, to represent my fatherland, #God always the reason. Now back to club side,” Agu wrote beneath a picture he posted on his Instagram page.

Agu who made the GoalPoint Team Of The Week for Matchday 10 in the Portuguese topflight division has been an ever-present in Vitoria Setubal’s team roster this season since he made his debut for the team against Vitória Guimaraes SC in October.

Agu has made five league appearances and eight in all competitions for Vitoria Setubal since he arrived on a season loan deal from FC Porto.

Vitoria Setubal are currently eighth in the Portuguese topflight division table with 14 points from 10 games. They will face Penafiel, a second division side in a Taca de Portugal clash on Sunday at the Municipal Stadium.

  • Great to see a player grab an opportunity to Show what they can do and do it well. Agu was described as one of the best players in the Nigerian jersey and with this performance silenced the doubters and did enough to give the coach confidence that he can call him up for the next competitive game.

This is in contrast to others who were called up for other friendlies recently and did themselves no favours. These friendlies are arranged to give players a chance to show why they should be called up. The onus is on the player to prove without a doubt that they can do it for Nigeria.

Agu and Chukwueze are sure to be called up for the Seychelles. On the other hand Kelechi Nwakali fluffed his lines against Liberia when he was given a chance to show what he can bring to the party

Sir, you are so on point. Agu was given the chance and he took it. On the face of it he is miles behind Ndidi however if Agu continues to churn out quality performances for Setubal, he will instill confidence that he can do a decent job in Nigeria’s defensive midfield when called upon.
Shame Nwakali could not replicate the kind of performance we saw him conjure against Atletico Madrid.
      Cameroon 2019 here we come.
Hip hip hip Super Eagles hooray!!!!

      • Yes Nwakali has regressed for both club and country since that World Cup warm up between Nigeria’s B team and Athletico Madrid.

I see Agu pushing for a place to partner Ndidi in the midfield. Etebo seems to be going backwards as well. It’ll be a fight between Agu and Etebo to partner. I think with this display Onazi is now history

      • Or for AFCON of they are fit same maintain their form our midfield will be Mikel Obi and Ndidi.

The battle for bench will be between Agu, Ogu and Etebo, with Ogu being versatile (can be used as a centre back as well plus left footed should get the nod, so straight up fight between Etebo and Agu

  • I believe Kelechi Nwakali is better than Agu. Mind you guys, it is only one game, which doesn’t show a players full potential. Well lets wait and see other matches

  • Quite impressive showing by this budding young talent, whose football has grown in leaps and bounds.
Theres has not been doubt at all about Mikel Agu’s ability in the first place given his apprentice training with FC Porto in more than 5yrs but his inability to cement a place in the elite division has robbed him a place of honour in the national team.
Last two summers, Mikel was outstanding in the colours of Victorial Setubal where he was on season long loan, winning a place in the team of the week on different ocassions; he did not however do badly last season at a modest Bursdapor in the Turkish elite side. Interestingly, this season he has taken it off from where he left off 2 summers ago with another 5 star performance.
