By Johnny Edward: Al Ahly’s Nigerian striker Junior Ajayi has been named in the 2017 Confederation of African Football best XI.
The selection is based on online voting by football fans across Africa.
Ajayi is one of the three Al Ahly players listed in the 2017 African best eleven during the Aiteo CAF Awards in Accra on Thursday night.
The 21-year-old who got maried in Lagos last Saturday was in the running for the CAF African Player of the Year- based in Africa award before the category was scrapped.
The former CS Sfaxien striker was named in attack alongside reigning African Footballer of the Year award Mohammed Salah and Espérance striker Taha Yassin Kheniessi.
In goal, 33-year-old Tunisian first choice, Aymen Mathlouthi, was picked while in defence, Manchester United’s Eric Bailly was joined by Ali Maaloul (Al Ahly and Tunisia), Ahmed Fathi (Egypt and Al Ahly).
In the midfield, Wydad Casablanca’s pair of Mohamed Ounajem and Achraf Bencharki joined Feyenoord’s Karim El Ahmadi and Khalid Boutaïb from Turkish Süper Lig side Yeni Malatyaspor.
