–Former Eagles striker named FC Gratkorn head coach
Former Super Eagles striker, Benedict Akwuegbu has taken to coaching and has been named head coach of FC Gratkorn, a third-tier league team in Austria.
Akwuegbu spent most of his playing career in Austria where he featured for Akmar from where he moved to to Germany.
On retirement after featuring for the Super Eagles in the AFCON in 2000 and 2002, Akwuegbe was later named assistant General Manager of Heartland before he went to England to obtain his coaching (B) license.
Once nick-named ‘Austria Bomber’, Akwuegbu confirmed exclusively to Complete Sports from his base that he has become the first African to coach a club in Austria.
“I’m grateful to God for the opportunity to head the coaching crew of FC Gratkorn.
“It’s a third division team, what we normally call regional league team but being the first African to handle a team here in Austria makes me happy”, Akwuegbu said.
