Amuneke: Our Defeat Is Wake-up Call

–Says team will perform better at the World Cup in Chile
By Bamidele Boluwaji:

National U-17 Golden Eaglets Coach Emmanuel Amuneke believes that the defeat suffered in the semi final stage of the about to be concluded CAF U-17 Championship in Niger is a wake-up call for the team ahead of the FIFA World Cup in Chile.

The Golden Eaglets lost 1-0 to South Africa in the encounter decided on Wednesday and will now be hoping to win the third place match.

Speaking after the shocking defeat, Amuneke said he was surprised why his players could not score goals in the match.

“I don’t understand why we couldn’t score even one from the chances we created.

Unfortunately, we conceded a cheap goal and tried to equalise but that is how football can be at times”, says the former international.

“We lost as a team, to a South African side which is solid tactically and disciplined and we shouldn’t take that away from them, their coach and players. Maybe this defeat is a wake-up call for us to go back and regroup and look back our performance here and be ready for Chile.

Also reacting after the match was South Africa Coach Molefi Petrus Ntseki who was full of praises to God for seeing his team through to the final of the Championship, having defeated Nigeria 1-0.

“Glory be to God the Almighty for what we have done because we can only do so because of His blessings. We had so much respect for Nigeria because we saw them against Zambia and came into this match well prepared and ready to compete. I think the boys came in stronger, tactically focused and disciplined”, he said.

“Yes, we beat the world champions but they are still good enough to go and try and defend their championship in Chile.

Now it is time to celebrate our win and watch Mali and Guinea and be ready for the final.
