Emmanuel Amuneke is confident the current Nigeria U-23 side can emulate the success of the 1996 squad by claiming gold medal in the men's football event of the Rio 2016 Olympic Games, reports .
The Dream Team-one handled by Dutchman, Jo Bonfrere, made history by ensuring. Nigeria became the first African nation to win Olympic football gold medal, a feat made at the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta, USA.
Amuneke played a crucial role for the Nigerian side by scoring the winner after coming on as a substitute in the 3-2 final victory against Argentina.
20 years after that historic feat, his former international team mate Samson Siasia will lead another set of upcoming stars to Rio hoping to write their name in gold.
And the former Barcelona star has backed his countrymen to go all the way in the competition.
"There is nothing to say Nigeria cannot repeat the feat of 1996," Amuneke who is now the head coach of Nigeria U-20 side told FIFA.com.
"It was a beautiful thing that we laid the foundation and others have followed our path, and I think our current team can repeat that success."
