Anderlecht: Injury Affected Onyekuru’s World Cup Chances, Our Coach Did Nothing Wrong

Belgian club Anderlecht have hit back at Nigeria forward Henry Onyekuru after he accused them of deliberately stalling his Everton career.

Onyekuru joined Everton from another Belgian club Eupen last summer but was immediately loaned to Anderlecht.

He picked up a knee injury  in a league game against Eupen last December and it was initially feared he would miss the rest of the season.

He however returned to training with the club towards the end of the campaign and made a couple of appearances for the Anderlecht’s reserves.

Anderlecht coach, Hein Vanhaezabrouck, did not however consider the Nigeria international fit enough to feature for the first team.

His inactivity stopped him from earning a place in Nigeria’s squad to the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia and also hindered his chances of getting a work permit to play for Everton next season.

“Henry is a great player and his injury in December weakened the squad and reduced the chances to participate to the World Cup with his country,” a club spokesman was quoted as saying by Liverpoolecho.co.uk.

“RSC Anderlecht, nor the technical staff never made any promise to Henry concerning his selection.

“RSCA is a professional club and it wouldn’t be very professional to make promises to players.
“The coach selects the best and fittest players for the games.”

You lied , everything in life has a purposes, as a club ,you have nothing to lose playing him knowing that he needed the world cup to get his work permit !!…I saw a deliberate action on your side to retain him ,thereby refusing to play him for the few matches remaining before the end of the session .Your intentions is to ruin his career ,which you already did .He could have been a sure bet for the world cup ,knowing now that Simon moses will miss the world cup .Also Nigeria needs such deadly wingers to compliment the strikers in the attack, which is really missing in the match against Congo!..I which Rohr can give Anyakuru the final chance by calling him to replace Simon moses!!

Of a truth, Onyekuru would have been on fire in the world cup because he would be definitely selected. All the same, he’s still very young and i guess he can really go far.

Henry, you know l am your great fan. this kind of thing do happen to a lot of folks who later on became the biggest and mage players. Like kanu Nwankwo, Mikel Obi, and some others l can’t remember right now. Your talent shall bring you out and Nigeria will laterally beg you in the not distant future. Live everything to God

  • @ CHIDI true talk bro. But remember simy never played in qualifiers and look at now he has a pretty much guaranteed spot on the team to russia. Henry would have only added more fire power and with simon moses a doubt, Henry would have made sense. It’s truly unfortunate anderlecht held him back but it’s water under the bridge now. Good thing is he’s still very young and will be a prominent part of the eagles in the following years to come.
