River Plate midfielder Enzo Perez has been called up by Argentina to replace the injured Manuel Lanzini for the 2018 FIFA World Cup.
This was confirmed on Argentina’s senior men’s verified Twitter handle, Seleccion Argentina, on Saturday.
West Ham midfielder Lanzini ruptured the anterior cruciate ligament on his right knee during the Albiceleste’s training session on Friday which ruled him out of the World Cup.
“Enzo Perez will be the player to replace Manuel Lanzini,” the handle was quoted.
Perez, 32, who made his Argentina debut in 2009, was initially in the Albiceleste’s 35-man provisional squad released by coach Jorge Sampaoli for the 2018 World Cup before he was dropped.
After Ángel Di María sustained an injury in the quarter-finals at the 2014 World Cup, Pérez started in his place in both the semi-final against Netherlands and final against Germany, which Argentina lost 1–0 after extra time.
