Argentina versus Nigeria is Crunch Time

Argentina versus Nigeria is Crunch Time

By Daniel Adeleke
Having gone down 2-0 in a very awful performance against Croatia in their first game, the Super Eagles were on the verge of joining African rivals Egypt, Morocco and Tunisia in exiting the tournament , if they lost to the formidable Iceland team on friday afternoon at the Volgograd stadium, and had to secure 3 points to stand a realistic chance of qualification to the next round.

The match started very slowly as Nigeria came into the game with new tactics. Our German coach opted for a 3-5-2 formation, with Iheanacho and Ahmed Musa pairing upfront, replacing Odion Ighalo and Alex Iwobi. This new tactic fared very poorly as Nigeria became the first team in Russia not to have a shot in the first 45 minutes.

Clearly something needed to be done.
After the interval, Nigeria were a different proposition as Musa, who ended last season at CSKA Moscow on loan from Leicester city, proved to be the difference having been recalled to the team after the disappointing defeat to Croatia.

Musa put on a one -man show as the Eagles got their first goal from a perfect counterattack. Iheanacho brought down a clearance from an Iceland set-piece before he fed it to Moses who moved the ball briskly, before he lofted in a cross to Musa, who brought down the cross from the air with his stretched foot before he lashed home a half volley to beat Hannes Hallorsson.

It was a moment of sheer delight as he became Nigeria’s highest goal scorer at the World Cup. And it was Musa again in his splendid glory, as the leicester city man, raced onto the ball beating Ari Arnason for pace, before checking to dribble his way past Halldorsson, to put Nigeria 2 clear of Iceland. And as much as Nigeria Were brilliant on the night, they conceded yet another penalty in their second group game in a row.

It has to be said, a good win for the boys against Iceland. But now Nigeria will have their qualification in their hands as they will face a slightly beleaguered group rivals Argentina. Nigeria should look to put away their knack for giving away cheap penalties and also look to put up a very commanding defensive display, against the likes of Messi, Dybala, Di Maria, etc when they face Argentina.

Nigeria would go into the final group stage match knowing a win will take them through to the next stage, regardless of results from the other group game. While a draw could also see the Eagles go through but they must have a superior goal difference to Iceland if Iceland defeats Croatia.

Nigerians will wait anxiously to see the kind of display the Eagles will put out but will only hope for a befitting one to avoid an early exit from the tournament.

I see all these hype on Musa, he did well. However, what reason was given on why they couldn’t shoot at goal or shoot at all in the first half. What was playing in their heads. Mediocre, fear; this is what I need them to address before the match against Argentina.

As I have always said, the team psychologist has a lot of work to do now.

I have been following Rohr and is beginning to change his comments from being skeptical about the progress they will make in the World Cup to a more optimistic view.

I watched many matches in this World Cup and I have not seen anything special or any one special. It is all tactics, stamina, discipline and winning mentality.

It all comes down to how much you want it, we need a win and that winning mentality must been seen starting from Rohr because like I have been reading, most of the players got it.

I cannot agree with you more, it seem Rhor already has an excuse of my team is a young team, they would do better in 2022. You are very correct the team that wants it more usually wins.

After this World Cup, win or loose, this couch must give way to a more optimistic, seasoned and solid couch if Nigeria is to fulfil its potential fully. He is 64 and in my view, he is overwhelmed by the shear weight of it all.

  • Looking at future is good but doing realistically is wat makes sence. GR will say if ARG defeat us that is planning towards 2022 so no regrets so said Keshi too in 2014 wc about 2018 so said as well largerback in 2010 about 2014. If this coaches are fooling us can we also fool ourselves ,no.modric and co have not bn to wc before  but see hw they are performing, also Denmark team have bn to wc before now. So SE know that wat is good to be done is worth done at that time ,no procrastination.going by hw Iran and Morrocco were unfairly officiated against today just to make sure Portugal and Spain were kept in the competition I just hope we would not be cheated out of the game by this little gods match officials . Well time will tell.

  • Fifa already  new d result of d game.if agentina  loss it wil cost so much loss in advertisement. , endosement., contract loss., club lik man city bacelona juventus real madrid would ve budget deficit. Pepsi cola of America wil cut staff strength. Emirates airline wil reduce area of coverage. So expect 2 penalty in d 1st half against eagles

I am already feeling kinda sad that our last match is against Messi-Argentina and this match will decide who join Croatia to the round 16.
There will be bias and for sure, it is obvious who the “superpowers” and “decision-markers” will opt for !!!

      African have suffered !
We are just striving by the Grace of The Most High!!!

Yes, “They” would definitely allow us to beat Iceland but for sure “They”‘ have already known who and who they want to qualify from each group

Let take the game of Portugal vs Iran for example, can someone tell me why Cr7 didn’t get a red card…? I’m his fan but he causes and infringement that is red-card bound…..no difference from what Song did in the last World Cup in Brazil.

How about the referee stopping matches to go consult the VAR to make decisions in some matches but decline to do that when countries like Egypt, Morocco, Serbia etc demanded same against “bigger” opponents ???!!!

All Argentina need tomorrow to go thru is just 3 points and ….in as much as I stand firm to believe in my heart that the Nigerian team have all it will take to savage a result and go thru….my mind tells me that the game has already being played with the result known to the “owners”!

      God dey!!!!

Today’s game will sure hold some level of bias, favouritism and a 3rd party “bullying”…..it has happened in the past so it is not sure of a big deal…and for sure, it is obvious who the “superpowers” and “decision-markers” will opt for !!!

Africans, most especially have suffered !
We are just striving by the Grace of The Most High!!!

…. Ha ha ha, Mr Olu, l like your conclusion after your analysis , “…so expect 2 penalties in the first half against the Eagles”

I think there will be no cheating Nigeria this time around because one, the officiating referree is known to be a man of good repute, and then two VAR is now there to guard against any fowl play. The Eagles however should be very careful especially in our 18 yard box about how they tackle the Argentines who will employ all the trocks in their books to gain advantage.

However, the Eagles will carry the day !

  • It’s time for the SuperEagles’s team psychologist to get active. The players should be primed to optimal psychological fitness: maximal restraint in the 18 yard box, no retaliatory attacks, absolute bluntness to ignore all provocations (including racist abuse), having a winning spirit, fight without relenting up to the last whistle even if the Eagles are winning (which they will).

    Argentina must fall.

REMEMBER THIS MESSAAGE REMINDER!!! Gernot Rorh PLEASE DO NOT CHANGE THIS WINNING TEAM, you should improve the Super Eagles, psyche and motivate them for victory all the time from the beginning to the end of all their games, they should never lose concentration even at the last minutes of all their games, motivate them all through !!!
I would say it again, as have previously stated, I want to thank Almighty GOD and also to thank Gernot Rorh, for listening to our plea to play this set of players that I HAVE BEEN POSTING ALL THESE WHILE PLEASE DO NOT CHANGE THIS WINNING TEAM, STICK TO THEM AS YOUR FIRST 11.
    Iheanacho
    Moses Musa
    Iwobi/Etebo
    Mikel Ndidi
    Omeruo/Idowu Balogun Ekong Ebuehi

God is involved in affairs of man, definitely, He will see us through. Nigeria is winning, no doubt about that. Cheers

  • Reading some people comments here always gladden my heart but to some they will always try to display their sentiment skills no matter what. Nawa for them. Don’t know when it has become a crime for a coach to said what is obvious about his team being young and one for the future. They sha want the man to fail at all means but God pass them. Today will be another victory for Gernot Rohr Eagles by God grace…

  • Now after d loss to argentina. 1st question d nigeria coaching crew wat impact do dey ve during a game.are dey pragmatic in approaching rohr or dogmatic.
