Arsenal 1-2 Southampton: Clyne’s Goal Send Gunners Out of Capital One Cup

It was a fabulous night for Southampton and their 5,000 travelling fans as they marvelled at the swagger of Morgan Schneiderlin in the centre of midfield. He was electrifying.

Meet a Southampton fan in the street today and they will stop you in your tracks to talk incessantly about Nathaniel Clyne’s magnificent 30 yard winner. It is a moment that has already gone down in Saints folklore.

Ronaldo Koeman’s team exposed Arsenal’s soft-underbelly, scarring them with this brilliant win.

Even when they fell behind, they didn’t panic. What a quality to have.

Arsenal were ahead when Alexis Sanchez scored a beauty from a free-kick with just 14 minutes on the clock. Fraser Forster, the £10m keeper in goal for Southampton, didn’t even bother to move.

It was in from the moment Sanchez, who pulled his shorts up so tight they resembled a pair of budgie smugglers before he took his kick, pinged off his right boot. Top corner, take that.

‘1-0 to the Arsenal’ sang a hesitant Emirates crowd, almost full after the club sold tickets to their supporters for a tenner a throw. It didn’t last long.

Southampton showed invention and energy, relying on the influence of Morgan Schneiderlin in the centre of midfield to nick the ball from the feet of Tomas Rosicky, Jack Wilshere and Abou Diaby.

His first half performance was full or purpose, launching himself into tackles and sending the ball into the feet of debutant Sadio Mane and Dusan Tadic.

This team did not panic, steadying themselves after Arsenal’s opening strike and responding with two of their own before half-time.
