Awoniyi: Enyimba Were Tough Opponents At Super-6

By Izuchukwu Okosi:

Flying Eagles striker Taiwo Awoniyi has admitted that the U20’s Super-6 Tournament clash against Federation Cup champions Enyimba FC was his toughest game of the 15-game invitational competition which also involved the U23 Eagles, the Dream Team XI, reports Completesportsnigeria.com.

League champions, Kano Pillars and CAF Confederation Cup representatives, Dolphins and Warri Wolves were the other teams that took part in the tournament held at the Abuja National Stadium, organised by the League Management Company.

“Enyimba were much older than us, but we gave our best and never let them intimidate us when we played against them in the Super-6 tournament.

“The game was my toughest of the tournament because despite our victory, their defenders never gave us a breathing space.

“The tournament no doubt has helped our preparations for the AYC. I thank God for how the tournament panned out,” Awoniyi who was adjudged as the Most Valueable Player of the tournament told Completesportsnigeria.com.

Awoniyi was fouled in the penalty box and the resultant spot kick was converted by captain Musa Mohammed while Musa Yahaya scored the second goal to seal a 2-0 win for Manu Garba’s team.

Awoniyi whose pre-contract with Swedish side, Kalmar FF, will take effect in August (2015) when he turns 18 years-old was awarded with N200,000 for the MVP, Completesportsnigeria.com can report.

The Flying Eagles won the tournament by winning four and drawing one game with 13 points with a game to spare.

The team who will campaign in the African Youth Championship scored a total of 12 goals, Awoniyi claiming two of those strikes.

Super Eagles ‘Team B’ striker Christian Obiozor of Kano Pillars was top scorer of the tournament with four goals.
