ALMERIA of Spain midfielder Ramon Azeez looks set to complete an amazing break into the Super Eagles when he steps out in Nigeria’s opening World Cup game against Iran in Curitiba.
The Eagles are a young team full of World Cup debutantes but Azeez’s rise into the first eleven has been particularly meteoric, having not taken any part in the qualifiers and winning his senior debut only on March 6 this year in an international friendly against Mexico played in the United States.
“It is an amazing dream-come-true for me to be here at the World Cup and I can only thank coach Stephen Keshi for giving me the chance,” the shy former under-17 Golden Eaglet told Complete Sports in Campinas. “It is true that I have come a long way in a short time. Now, all I want to do is work hard to justify the coach’s faith in me. I am ready for the challenge.”
Unless, Keshi decides on a last minute shuffle, Azeez will join team lynchpin Mikel Obi and the workaholic Ogenyi Onazi to man Nigeria’s midfield against Iran. Incidentally, himself and Onazi were teammates in the Golden Eaglets and the Lazio enforcer has also helped Azeez to settle quickly into the Super Eagles.
