Babangida: Iceland Vs Argentina Draw Puts Nigeria Under Pressure To Beat Croatia

By James Agberebi:

Former Nigeria international Tijani Babangida has admitted that the surprise 1-1 draw between Croatia and Argentina in Group D 2018 World Cup on Saturday will put the Super Eagles under pressure ahead of their game against Croatia.
Despite going a goal down through Sergio Aguero on 19 minutes, Alfred Finnbogasson equalised for Iceland just four minutes later.
Argentina had the chance to go 2-1 up but Lionel Messi was denied from the penalty spot by  Hannes Halldorsson.
Reacting to the surprise stalemate, Babangida singled out Iceland for their performance against the two-time World Cup winners.
“It was a very strong game and I was surprised about Iceland,” Babangida told completesportsnigeria.com.
” A lot of people are talking about Iceland and I remember what they did at the 2016 European Championship and how they beat England.
“They are a very strong side, in their defensive aspect they were very strong and also when they come out they are very strong. They are not a push over side.
“We will have to wait and see the outcome of the game against Croatia to know how our boys will fare against Argentina and Iceland. But the good thing is that they have seen this game and know that anything is possible.
“The outcome between Iceland and Argentina now puts us under pressure against Croatia. It means we just have to win because if we fail to win, it will become difficult getting to the second round.”
Nigeria take on Croatia later on Saturday night at 8pm Nigerian time.

Sorry Mr. Babangida, I dessergreed with you. We have no pressure on us at all but my concern now is our team. If they play with total commitment and no respect any big teams like Iceland did today then, we are going to go far.

Like I have said earlier, Croatia would be under pressure and can Super Eagles taken the advantage of that?

Who will be our top 9? Ighalo right? Hmm…. This is going to be a big mistake if he do top as our top 9. He can come in in the second half for Simy.

If we win today, we will give thanks to God and coach Rohr but If we don’t I personally will blame coach Rohr for is tactics and his selection. I wish Nigeria good luck. God bless Nigeria!!!

Omo9ja well said , yes I agree with you totally .I expected Rohr to field in Simmy, having Ighalo as a starter in the match, is a minus!!..Ighola is poor in anticipation and does not fix himself at the right time to act .Simmy is big and can dribble , he is a good striker on one on one basis with difenders, just like Diego costa and has good positioning ,which Ighola lacks!!…Ighalo always places himself on offside position and starting him ahead of Simmy is a minus !!

@Babanjida, I disagree with you that the pressures will be on Nigeria to win Croatia. Remember Croatia are ahead of us in the FIFA ranking. This ranking gas a sort of psychological effect on how you see those under you in the rankings. Croatia sees themselves as bettering us. So the pressure is more on Croatia. Our morale booster is that we don’t see Croatia as better and we are annoyed. We will fight aggressively to prove that point. Croatia are not better although they have world class players. @Omo9ja, the coaches are with the players 24/7 and knows who will play to benefit the team. Many things come into play when making the final selection. Whatever selection they make should be supported by the true fans of the Super Eagles.

Let’s stop deceiving ourselves. The Croatian team is better than the Super Eagles in every aspect. We have an outside chance of getting a result. Have we suddenly forgotten the shambolic display they out up at the friendlies? Indeed Nigerian fans are overly emotional. I wouldn’t be surprised if the SE get a pounding.
