Balogun Stars As Brighton Stun Man United To Bag Home Win

By Adeboye Amosu:

Super Eagles defender, Leon Balogun’s debut appearance in the English Premier League ended on a happy note as Brighton & Hove Albion recorded a 3-2 win against Manchester United on Sunday, at the The American Express Community Stadium , Falmer on Sunday, Completesportsnigeria.com reports.

The centre-back came in for the injured Lewis Dunk in the 20th minute and posted a fine performance in the game

Brighton were rewarded for their positive start to the game when Glenn Murray flicked Solomon March cross past David De Gea in the 25th minute.

Shane Duffy added the second three minutes later firing home from Pascal Gross dangerous ball into the area.

Manchester United dragged themselves back into the game when Romelu Lukaku nodded the ball home from close in the 34th minute.

The hosts however regained their two- goal advantage when Gross netted the third from the spot two minutes from the break after Eric Bailly fouled him in the box.

United struggled to break down the hosts in the second half and got their second goal of the game courtesy of Paul Pogba’s penalty deep into stoppage time.

  • Balogun Leon has finally made his premiership bow against Man Utd.
What a great start for him, I’m pretty sure he’s mentally ready for the rigours of premiership, I do hope he keeps out of injury.

This is a cheering news for Nigeria Super Eagles.

  • Indeed. I watched the match and Balogun didn’t put a foot wrong. In fact one would think he had been playing in the Premier League for some time.

He was called to action from about the 60th minutes when he calmly intercepted a cross from the right.

His close marking also visibly unsettled Marcus Rashford on occasions whilst his overall effective communication and coordination with his fellow defenders helped keep (a rather poor, I might add) Man United attackers at bay before they conceded a penalty late on.

    Skysports.com, dailystar.co.uk and mirror.co.uk all incidentally rated Balogun’s performance as 7/10.

While the severity of Dunk’s injury (who Balogun replaced) is yet to be ascertained, his absence could help the Nigeria international, who did his chances no harm vs Man United, force his way into Brigton starting 11.
