Balogun: To Get Better, Super Eagles Must Get Dirty

Balogun: To Get Better, Super Eagles Must Get Dirty

By Johnny Edward:

Super Eagles defender Leon Balogun has tasked his Nigeria team-mates to learn football’s darker arts following their painful exit from the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia.

The Nigerian team exited the tournament last week losing 2-1 to Argentina with Balogun playing all three games.

“It’s always important when you play internationals to be a bit dirty,” Balogun, who will join Brighton Hove Albion, told BBC Sport.

“That’s what Argentina has, definitely, and you also need to be cold-blooded – that’s probably the most important (lesson from this World Cup).

“It will be very important to keep going the way we have started.

“We have experienced players, young players, talented players – and there are even more players that are not in the team yet – and we have to keep developing them and investing in their football education.

“We just have to keep working and keep our focus on advancing year after year and then in the next four years we will have a good team – maybe an even better one.”

We had a penalty, Odion ighalo started fighting on the side, that action ighalo took can make Moses loose the penalty, but wait look at Moses, he wasn’t even concerned about the drama, he was even looking the other way round, and when ref said play, he bannged the penalty, that’s what we call dirty, you don’t have to miss your chance, grab your chance with two hands,if it were to be one local player with the drama ighalo was causing, he will loose it, so no time, clinical, ighalo was naive, and don’t need to play in our team anymore, actions like that he took shouldn’t be warranted, skipper is there shush,so i agree with Balogun dirty, if Ighalo even cored his own, and the Argentines scores at the end we qualify, so be dirty.

@Presh I respect and appreciate  ur explaination But To play Dirty is to use dishonest or deceitful tactics to win a game according to some dictionaries I have consulted. So I don’t really know what Balogun is meant by ‘Argentina played dirty’.

    • I think what Balogin meant was that Super Eagles are generally too ‘nice’ while playing. If you understand how a typical Cameroun team plays, then the word ‘dirty’ will be better conceptualized.

“Dirty” involves time wasting tactics, frustrating your opponents, etc. A General determination to win at all cost.

  • We’re now talking. Playing dirty is like an art in any sport. Can’t do without it. It involves many things, like ‘strategic diving’, for instance. But you’ve got to be skilled at practicing these stunts not to get caught.
