Super Eagles right back Leon Balogun underwent series of rigorous fitness tests when he teamed up with his new side, FSV Mainz, for pre-season training on Tuesday, Completesportsnigeria.com reports.
The 26-year-old who joined FSV Mainz 05 from Bundesliga newcomers SV Darmstadt 98 on a three year deal, was also joined by other new signings; Danny Latza, Florian Niederlechner and Maximilian Beister in what was their first day in action as they got their Mainz careers underway.
The 05ers will be looking to build on last season's 11th-place finish under head coach Martin Schmidt, and have several new squad members in tow to help them do just that.
Balogun who has German and Nigerian heritage, was a key player for SV Darmstadt 98, making 21 appearances albeit scoring four goals.
The former Fortuna Düsseldorf defender has four caps for the Nigerian national team, the Super Eagles, since making his debut in March 2014.
“We were made aware of Leon Balogun during his time at Fortuna Düsseldorf, but then he suffered an injury which threw him off course. But a strong season with Darmstadt 98 put him back on our radar.
"He is a physically strong, dynamic right-back who can also play in the centre of defence. We are looking forward to having such a highly motivated, ambitious player, who is really passionate about playing in the Bundesliga,” says FSV Mainz sporting director Christian Heidel on the club's official website.
