Baxter Confident Key Players Williams, Serero Will Be Fit For Bafana – Eagles Clash

Bafana Bafana of South Africa head coach, Stuart Baxter, is hopeful that the duo of Ronwen Williams and Thulani Serero will be fully fit for Saturday’s 2019 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying fixture against the Super Eagles of Nigeria, Completesportsnigeria.com reports.

Baxter has had to re-arrange his squad due to injuries to several of his key players ahead of the crucial encounter billed for the FNB Stadium, Johannesburg.

The likes of Dean Furman, Bongani Zungu, Keagan Dolly, Sibusiso Vilakazi, Bradley Grobler and Kamohelo Mokotjo are also nursing injuries and are not called- up for the game.

Williams , who is Bafana Bafana’s second choice goalkeeper behind Itumeleng Khune and influential midfielder, Serero who plays for Dutch side, Vitesse Arnhem are both nursing injuries but Baxter is confident they will recover in time for the game.

“We had two scares, Ronwen Williams has a slight knee strain, so he won’t train for 48 hours but we think he’s going to be ok. Thulani Serero has an ankle gash, had stitches, but should be in full training tomorrow.” Baxter told reporters on Monday.

Baxter also confirmed that all 23 players invited for the game are now in camp and will begin full training for the game on Tuesday.

Bafana are currently second in Group E, with eight points from four games, and need just three more points to guarentee their qualification to next year’s showpiece in Cameroon.

Nigeria are top of the standings – one point ahead, while Libya are on four points and Seychelles

Meanwhile, the South Africa Football Football Association confirmed on Monday that the Bafana Bafana will face Paraguay in a friendly encounter tagged the Nelson Mandela Challenge at the Moses Mabhida Stadium, Durban on Tuesday, November 20.

The South Americans will be South Africa’s first non-African opponents in more than three years.

  • That means Baxter will have all the 23 players in their first full training tomorrow. Nigeria that released their own list first, how many players are in camp? Omeruo, Chukwueze and Idowu to arrive tomorrow, perhaps joined by Ezenwa? Yes, I know 80% of SA players are in their home country, but the few pros abroad are already in camp too. Anyway, they all played for their clubs over the weekend, so I think the Eagles camp should be full by Wednesday too.

    • 10 players in camp confirmed last night. The rest should be in this morning. Most are already in Nigeria. Given that some had matches Sunday night it’s expected.

I’m sure also that anyone who arrives late without a valid excuse will put themselves at a disadvantage when it comes to starting lineup

  • @KEL our players are not serious at all……bt lets see how it goes first……winning the match is the most important thing

My friend you don’t need to worry. They will all be in camp latest by Tuesday. They will even train on that Tuesday and is open to public. If you want to watch them, you go to Asaba.

If we should loose this match, the coach should go home. It is do or die match for Nigeria. Just to let you guys know. I am positive Super Eagle will prevail. God will be on our side.

    • Yes, Edoman. I think Rohr is taking this match personally too, if I read his lips correctly. Just that he doesn’t talk a lot. He too is still very much hurt by that unexpected loss, and I think he has communicated that to Musa the captain who has also seriously caught the bug and must have gingered his troops (again, reading Musa’s lips). If anyone watches that match again, they’ll see the young Nigerian team was better on the day by skills and flair, but was let down by tactical experience. So, demolition of SA some Saturday is a collective desire — from the NFF to Rohr to the players to Nigerian soccer fans.

For me, all appointments cancelled from 2pm to 7pm that day, no stories abeg. All of us go gather play that match. Lol. It’s beyond the 3 points or Afcon qualification and on paper or going by the each squad strength, I think we should maul SA like a tiger in their own backyard.

Also, I think the biggest motivation is Baxter who is very boastful and you’ll never see him showing respect to opposing teams, which is why small teams always bring him back to earth. Still, he’s always still boastful and you see it written all over his face. Maybe he’s trying to ginger his troops, but he seems to believe he has Nigeria’s number for SA. #LET’S GO THERE SUPER EAGLES

  • For having lost to SA in a competitive match, Rohr has dented his image already. I’m sure he has more at stake not to let this one slip off his hands!

  • @edoman and achi…..we cant afford to lose these match…..itz a du or die affair……God bless nigeria
