BEATEN BUT NOT DISGRACED: How Super Eagles Rated Vs Atletico Madrid

Completesportsnigeria.com’s ADEBOYE AMOSU rates the performance of Super Eagles players in the friendly against Atletico Madrid at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium, Uyo on Tuesday…

FEMI THOMAS 6/10
Conceded three goals but made a number of key saves in the game. He was not at fault for either of the goals.

MUSA MOHAMMED 6/10
The right-back put in a fine performance in the game. Made overlapping runs up front and performed his defensive task dutifully.

OLAMILEKAN ADELEYE 5/10
The FC IfeanyiUbah defender was caught out of position a couple of times and was badly positioned for Atletico Madrid’s third goal. He put in an average showing in the game.

CHINEDU AJANAH 6/10
Misses a glorious chance to put the Eagles ahead in the first half after directing his header from a good position off target. Did not do badly in what was his maiden appearance for the Super Eagles.

EBUBE DURU 5/10
Made a couple of interceptions but did not support the attack much. He was replaced by Ikouwen Udoh after sustaining an injury in the second half.

IBRAHIM ALHASSAN 4/10
The former Akwa United player was not in his best elements in the game. Struggled to impress and was hauled off before the break.

KELECHI NWAKALI 8/10
Scored Nigeria’s first goal of the game, a stunning strike from the outside the box. The young midfielder was a handful for the opponents.

CHIDIEBERE NWAKALI 7/10
Took time to settle into the game and improved with the introduction of Usman Mohammed after the break. Showed he can play a role in the main Eagles in future.

EMEM EDUOK.  5/10
Played to the gallery at times even though he showed some promise. He was at fault for the first goal scored by Atletico Madrid as he lost the ball rather cheaply in midfield.

DAYO OJO   5/10
Struggled in an unfamiliar left-wing role and was duly substituted early in the second half.

SAMAD KADIRI 5/10
Found the going too tough on his international debut. The Sunshine Stars forward did not really impress in the game.

SUBSTITUTES
DESTINY ASHADI 5/10
Came in for the ineffective Ibrahim Alhassan and added more steel to the midfield

USMAN MOHAMMED 7/10
A fine performance from the Norway based midfielder who scored a beauty of a goal following his introduction after the break.

TOSIN OMOYELE 5/10
The Plateau United forward added bite to the team’s attack following his introduction. Provided the assist for Usman Mohammed’s second goal.

IKOUWEN UDOH 5/10
Proved his class after coming in for the injured Ebube Duru. Defended well and supported the attack  at will.

ALHASSAN IBRAHIM 3/10
Didn’t make much impact following his introduction.

  • Kelechi Nwakali should be on the plane to Russia. I can imagine a midfield consisting of Obi Mikel,Wilfred Ndidi and Kelechi Nwakali……very tantalising. That guy is pure class!

That boy Kelechi Nwakali should be on his way to Russia with the super Eagles. I can imagine a midfield consisting of Obi Mikel, Wilfred Ndidi and Kelechi Nwakali…..very tantalising. The guy is pure class!!

Kelechi nwakali should be invited to super Eagles team without further delay! Sublime and magical passes, a stunning and screamer goal getter. Coach Rohr hmmmm, kelechi is the truth because you and pinnick amaju can’t hid this talented player while uche agbo and mikel Agu are on our world cup list. Kelechi is better than Agbo and Agu mikel even john ogu. So Coach Rohr pls call him up with immediate effect please. It shows our so called scouts have been lazing about in Europe if they couldn’t spot real talent like kelechi. Pls o otherwise?

  • I am happy with the performance of Kelechi Nwakali, he did not disappoint my faith in his abilities.
I have in the past advocated for his invitation to compete for shirt in the main SE team after our poor performance in games in the absence of Mikel Obi.
Kelechi’s confidence on the ball is next to nothing, he reminds me of The bull Daniel Omokachi.

He should proceed to Uyo immediately to camp and train with the main team while Rho and the NET figure out how to add him to the 30 man list, even if it means paying a fine.

  • The NFF

  • Nwakali had no right to take the finesse shot from where he did, let alone score what was a world class goal against a world class team yesterday!

Who does he think he, Luis Figo?

As if scoring a delightful freekick (from a similar distance actually) in the Under-17 World Cup against Mexico on the 5th November 2015 was not enough, he goes on to amaze the Uyo crowd yesterday!

There has to be something about this guy and long-range screamers.

More of the same in years to come, please!

Super eagles scouts are junk of jokers if they couldn’t acknowledge the conspicuous talent of kelechi nwakali.

    • Chima E Samuels 6 months ago

Big jokers especially Agali who was sacked twice as a local coach relegating two teams… bro we need to replace this bad poor mediocre scouts… If not for CS where we have been calling for Simy no one would have scouted Simy

  • Tunde 6 months ago

Kelechi is not new to the main super eagle set up, he was invited for Poland and Serbia friendly match, if its possible he should be given another chance to impress the coach

  • Chima E Samuels 6 months ago

We all know kelechi is a good player starting from the u17 days but Nigerians always find it hard to give youngster breakthrough same applies to musa Mohammed great right back but we ignore several times to the bench anytime he makes the team under oliseh not Rohr though. Now it’s time to move on from age once a player is good then he is good. Musa Mohammed Usman Mohammed and kelechi nwakali…

  • Ara Nkita 6 months ago

Invite Kelechi Nwakali to the super Eagles camp to Russia immediately.
I can imagine a midfield consisting of Obi Mikel, Wilfred Ndidi and Kelechi Nwakali.
Please he should be on the plane to Russia.

  • As if I knew Nigerians will be quick to advocate for his inclusion in the world cup team, let him have a bad game and he will be crucified immediately..this is a player that has never played under Rohr before therefore it will be extrememly hard taking into consideration the limited time we have to prepare for the WC…Or is it not same Nwakali who found it hard to break into a VVV Venlo team that is struggling in the Eridivisie only to be shipped back to the 2nd division to MVV.we need to allow these guys mature before we call for their introduction into the main team so they wont be in a hurry to impress and would come in with ease…Haven said that i believe this guy is one for the future and with time he will get into the main team while also progressing in his club career

@ Luomo, thank u so much. People like u who talk sense are few in this forum.

Can anyone tell us why the coach change “Muazzam,” Alhassan Ibrahim, even before half-time? Was there a suspected injury? It’s strange to became a liabilityremove a midfielder so early, when goals have not been scored. Maybe it was something personal, I just can’t understand. His replacement was much worse, and

  • eyitayo14 6 months ago

@luomo, you dont really know Nwakali if you do you will know he is a talent. getting into a team in europe is down to formation and coach’s perspective on how the game should be played. Nothing is wrong with Nwakali. i believe he will add much to our world cup eagles. we need him. having him and ndidi under the leadership of john mikel obi will be a pure delight to our midfield play and an albatross to our opponents. that boy is a jewel.

  • Chairmanfemi 6 months ago

@Ako amadi, am very sure you watched the highlight only cuz we/those that watched the match were already clamouring for his removal even before the coach did. He was really on his Off-day and he knew it himself

  • Ayphillydegreat 6 months ago

Even if it’s to at least train with the main team. He should be in the SuperEagles without further delay. In 1994 Kanu, Taribo and Tijani Babangida were called up by Westerhoff during training camp. They played in the friendly against Sweden and distinguished themselves. Though they didn’t make the final 23 to the USA, but they eventually became global superstars. They won Africa its first ever Olympic gold in football two years later. After watching the game over and over again I believe there are at least 4 players in that game that deserves to be in training camp with the main SuperEagles. The Nwakali brothers, Musa Muhammed and Usman who scored the second goal. However, I’m glad that we have some players that can step in anytime they’re called upon and most of the players that played against Atletico can still be a part of the Olympics in 2020 and the AFCON next year. #FLY LIKE AN EAGLE INTO THE FUTURE#

  • @luomo thank you very much. you have said it all. that is Nigerian for you. Because he played well in just a friendly match now they are clamouring for him to be included in the world cup team at the expense of already established and experienced player. They will be talking as if they are coach coaching them.He his surely a player for the future even if he is not invited to train with the main team now. The already called up players are good so let us continue to support them with are prayers.

Please agbo and AGU are not good enough for the SE and are not better that Kel Nwakali. Stop all this sentiments.

      • Ara Nkita 6 months ago

        Thanks for that observation bro.
Forget these guys full of sentiments

  • Hmm. … established players like Agu and agbo abi? We have even seen K Nwakali performed in a game. Remind me of a game Dat u noticed that kind of performance from Agu.  Forget agbo…he hasn’t even played any competitive match under Rohr

  • Bomboy 6 months ago

You people are always coming up with new names for the coach to invite! If the coach listens to the voice of CSN readers, we will have more than 40 players in camp….

  • Mikel Agu has endured serious bashing among football fans in this CSN forum.

Haba! is the guy that bad!

I have to confess that I haven’t seen much of him for club or country to make a considered assessment.

All I can say is that the slagging Agu is receiving reminds me of the critisms that England’s Owen Hargreaves received prior to the World Cup in 2006.

As it happened, Hargreaves went on to be one of the best performers for England in that world cup.

Just think of Usman Mohammed’s goal yesterday, tell me, did anyone really think he had that sort of performance in him?

I wish Mikel Agu all the best whether he makes the final 23 man squad or not.

  • edric 6 months ago

nwakali shud b included in this super Eagles team we need his creativity in midfield

  • Simple 6 months ago

The same Agbo whose team won the Belgian league and Agu who plays in the Turkish Super League.

I now ask, Is club performance and league ranking not the basis for call-up to the national team?

Google K.Nwakali’s stat for his club this season and see if he really deserves a call up.

Agbo and Agu’s stats speaks of their quality.

A match is not enough to assess a player.
