BELOW AVERAGE: How Super Eagles Rated Vs Croatia

Completesportsnigeria.com’s ADEBOYE AMOSU rates Super Eagles players after Saturday night’s disappointing Russia 2018 World Cup defeat to Croatia…

FRANCIS UZOHO 6/10
Conceded twice in the game but made a couple of Good saves too. Not a bad debut World Cup appearance for the young goalkeeper despite the Super Eagles’ not too impressive performance.

SHEHU ABDULLAHI 4/10
Had a torrid time coping with the pace of Ivan Perisic and did little to help the attack. Certainly a tough World Cup debut for the Bursaspor of Turkey defender who posted a below average showing.

LEON BALOGUN 5/10
Shrugged off injury to start the game and did well to help curtail the Croatian’s key men despite the disappointing result.

WILLIAM TROOST-EKONG 4/10
Had a decent game until he had a brain freeze and conceded the penalty that led to Croatia’s second goal scored by Luka Modric.

BRYAN IDOWU 5/10
Started the game brightly but switched off afterwards. Never really combined well with Alex Iwobi on the left side of Nigeria’s attack.

WILFRED NDIDI 5/10
The Leicester City forward did do much to impress in the game. Guilty of passing the ball backwards instead of initiating attacking moves and did not break up play enough.

OGHENEKHARO ETEBO 7/10
Got the nod to start ahead of John Ogu in midfield and did do his chances any harm despite conceding an unfortunate own goal. He used his power and aggression well in the game.

MIKEL OBI 5/10
Struggled at times to cope with the pace of the game but showed some nice touches on the ball. He did not provide the leadership the team desperately needed and did not do enough to either support the attack or the defence.

ALEX IWOBI 4/10
A disappointing display from the Arsenal man who was hauled off for Ahmed Musa in the 62nd minute. He was ineffective on the left flank.

VICTOR MOSES 6/10
Was Nigeria’s best attacking outlet in the game, especially in the fist half. He put the Croatia’s defence under pressure and was unlucky not to get a goal. He however fizzled out in the second half.

ODION IGHALO 4/10
He was completely isolated upfront and looked far from his best. Playing in China seems to have slowed him down a bit.

SUBSTITUTES

AHMED MUSA 4/10
Came in for Alex Iwobi and like the man he replaced, Ahmed Musa was not able to affect the game positively.

KELECHI IHEANACHO 5/10
Added more bite and urgency to the team’s attack following his introduction but his late contribution couldn’t alter the scoreline.

  • Fair ratings for a poor team performance. A team set-up to defend, concedes two goals form basic set pieces, but cannot find a change in tactics to get them back into the game. It exposed that since 1994 we have produced strong players but the team’s tactics are simply not creative or attacking-minded. Is this based on the influx of foreign coaches keen not to lose that this match – maybe, but I think it more to do with the identity of the national team and its philosophy. This is best embodied in Mikel – defensive midfielder for Chelsea aka Nigeria’s Pirlo. We need a win but we need an identity too.

This match is the worst first match Nigeria ever played in history. Croatia may well follow Nigeria to home after three games. Croatia is not strong enough to beat Iceland non can it beat Argentina.

  • 3 5 2 formation is the best against European teams. Immidiately i saw Shehu Abdullahi instead of Ebuihi i knew we will be roasted. A player rated as best RB in the league he plays for but still not in the first eleven goes to show something missing. Echijele selected ahead of Aina is something I’m struggling to get my head around.

Please don’t rate anybody. It’s the coach’s fault. He didn’t from the friendly matches. How do you do same thing over and over again and expect a different result. Fire him!!!

The couch is not good. Nigerian Couch would have done far better.

  • Send Rohr back to wherever he came from. Rohr CANNOT learn. How can such a person teach others. And to think that it’s my tax contribution that is supporting him!

how on earth  did iheanacho nt on the starting lineup and was not even first sub .HOW?????

We dont have a team. They are all average players. I was not disapointed. I did not expect super eagle to do more than they did. No quality players among them in the likes of Okocha, Finidi, Olise, amuneke,Rashidi, Amokachi, okechukwu,Taribo etc. Forget this present team.

    • Whisky 2 months ago

u are right no quality players. as for me disband d team after d World Cup. inject new players retain only oghenekaro etebo and Victor moses

      • Olawale 2 months ago

Whiskey, we shouldn’t expect a magic again the Croatian. If we defeat them last night it will be one of the shock of the tournament too.. And don’t forget morroco played fine football and still lose to a minor and Egypt did also well just to concede a late set piece.. Guess that the problem of African set piece..

      • I don’t think disbanding this team is the solution. If you disband this team where are we bringing the above average players from. Bonfre Jo made a comment just before the world cup began i think what he said is the solution. Remember before the 1994 world cup? The core of that team had been together from Morroc 88. By 1990 new players were added and they stayed together, played a particular brand and still of football till they got to the world cup in 1994. The core of 1994 team played a minimum of four nations cup together before the world cup. I understand our frustrations, let us listen to Jo Bonfre I there in lies our salvation. Thanks

How much did etebo paid your guys. He was the worst player on the pitch. Make many touches only to play side ways. I think he deserve a 4 . Well you guys as journalisste should try and be objectif

    • Whisky 2 months ago

he was the man of the match on the Nigerian side

    • Olawale 2 months ago

Koko master, Then you shouldn’t be watching football, you either watch tennis or female sport.. Please you your head before you talk.. Etebo was the best Nigeria player on the field and should retain his place in the next game with the tackle and holding on the ball to make the likes of modric and rakitic ordinary in the midfield.. So shut up and go do skating or ten ten

  • mikel never played as an attacker in his 10yrs carear at chelsea, bcos he lacks mobility, fluidity, and cannot support attack.insted mourinho played him to his strength by deploying him in a full time defencive role.

  • iwobi is not a natural winger and under performs and dissapears in games 4 arsenal anytime he’s deployed dere.he’s best position is playing him in a supporting striker role.why bench a proper born winger ahmed musa for iwobi.poor decision making and tactics from genot rohr

I am beginning to think that Gernot Rohr is over rated. I didn’t see his input in making corrections from result of the friendlies played by Nigeria before the world cup. Playing players in wrong positions was his undoing in the match with Croatia. Mikel slows the tempo of attack with his timid play lacking urgency. Too much back passes even trailing behind is a kill joy.

  • Iheanacho shud have been paired in a double striker role with ighalo becos of his aggressiveness and hold up play to attack.bcos ighalo was isolated in de game as a lonely striker.

  • so in general it was a tactical blunder for genot rohr.he shud better consider making amends unless Nigeria is going nowhere out of group stage

You are spot on @ozilking. The team has the potentials to ruffle the feathers of some big teams in this tournament. Gernot Rohr only needs to make necessary corrections & be more dynamic in his tactical approach in our subsequent matches & the story will change for good.

Going down memory lane, a certain Bulgarian team was battered & butchered by our darling super eagles team in their opening group match of the USA 94 world cup by 3 goals to nothing. Still, they (bulgaria) got to the semi final stage of the competition after being written off!

LESSON: Do not write off a team until the final blast of the whistle because ‘it is not over until it is over’.
