BENCH WARMERS: 5 Super Eagles Players Struggling For Playing Time In Europe

As the leagues in various European countries get to the business end and the Super Eagles get set for friendly matches against Senegal and Burkina Faso, Completesportsnigeria. com's JAMES AGBEREBI takes a look at FIVE Super Eagles players who are struggling for regular playing time…

AHMED MUSA (Leicester City):

Since joining Premier League champions Leicester City from CSKA Moscow in the summer, Ahmed Musa has struggled for regular playing time.

Musa has made 18 appearances in all competitions, scoring just four, two of them in a 2-1 win against Everton in the FA Cup and the other two in the Premier League.

He has played in just two of Leicester's last five league games and since the appointment of Craig Shakespeare, Musa has not made the Foxes squad in games against Liverpool and Hull City.

ELDERSON ECHIEJILE (Sporting Gijon):

Since joining Sporting Gijon on loan from AS Monaco during the January transfer window, Elderson Echiejile has made only one appearance.

His debut for Sporting Gijon was against Barcelona on Wednesday at the Nou Camp which his team lost 6-1.

Prior to joining Sporting Gijon, Echiejile's last competitive game was in December 2016 for Standard Liege where he went on loan from Monaco.

WILLIAM TROOST-EKONG (Gent):

After signing for Gent two seasons ago, William Troost-Ekong was sent out on loan to Norwegian top flight club Haugesund.

At Haugesund, Troost-Ekong who was handed the captain's armband was a  regular, playing week in , week out.

But since returning to Gent in November 2016, Troost-Ekong has made just two appearances which were in January.

The two appearances were against Charleroi and Lokeren.

Since those two appearances in January, Troost-Ekong has only been good enough for the bench.

LEON BALOGUN (Mainz 05):

Leon Balogun's last competitive game for Mainz was in December, 2016 against Hamburger SV.

Since the resumption of the second half of the Bundesliga  late January, Balogun is yet to feature for Mainz.

Though injured prior to the start of the second stanza of the league, Balogun has since returned to fitness. But he has continued to be excluded from Mainz's matchday squads.

KELECHI IHEANACHO (Manchester City):

After enjoying regular playing time in the early part of this campaign, scoring in the Manchester derby, Iheanacho recently missed seven straight games in all competitions.

Since the coming of Brazil young forward Gabriel Jesus, Iheanacho has been overlooked for selection.

Iheanacho however made a scoring return for City in their 6-1 home win against Huddersfield Town in the Emirates FA Cup replay at the Etihad on Wednesday before going back to the bench for Sunday's EPL win over Sunderland.
