Ajayi should have been there in truth but the good form of Lokosa and Simy cannot be ignored. And its a 30 man list, not a 35 man list. Ajiboye and Eze, need to work extra hard.

  • Itofa 1 week ago

Not surprised by this squad list at all, the only worry I have is in the goal keeping department and I think ajayi and onyekuru should have being in the list at least.

  • Moonwalker 1 week ago

I dont care who makes the final list! All I care and know is that I’m going to watch my JOEL OBI in Russia!

Rhor believes in sticking to players that know his team philosophy. So no doubt, all d new guys will be dropped afterwards. That’s why he simply released a 30-man list cos he already knows his players.

The new guys will only go to Russia if and only if any of the old boys gets injured in camp.

  • Simy will be sub to IGHALO.

  • dvic 1 week ago

simy will make d list as our 2nd striker but lokosa,Mikel agu, will later be dropped.

  • @femi hope all is well?
It like u ar a comedian

  • ako amadi 1 week ago

Hahaha..!! Nigerians amuse me. Everybody wants the boy from his Local Government Area to be in the 30-man squad, and we have 774 Local Governments in the country

  • mutum 1 week ago

  • Chairmanfemi 1 week ago

Great list from a great coach. I want Akpeyi,Kenneth Omeruo,Agu,Agbo,Echejile, lokosa(am happy he made the list cuz he will be gain more exposure and experience),Plus 1 to be dropped

    • OLISAEKEZIE 1 week ago

WHY DO YOU WANT LOKOSA TO BE DROPPED?

    • Charmanfemi 1 week ago

Sorry bro, I meant ‘the following names above will be dropped’ I personally don’t want Lokosa to be dropped but we all know he’s surely gonna be dropped

  • Okeren Kelvin 1 week ago

Who wants it more will go to the world cup

  • Henry 1 week ago

i think Samuel kalu should ve been given a chance to shine In this list. Also ezekel imoh, brown ideye vener even get a look in. So sad for Brown, I feel he is a much better attacker than most of them there. He missed 2014 and now he missed this. Oh Brown Ideye, what have your pride done??

    • ovoke ogheneovo 1 week ago

Yes I quite agree with you brother… Brown ideye with is quality and experience deserved to be in that list. Infact, he is the only mistake coach made in the list. He should have been taken in place of lokossa, although, I acknowledge the quality of lokossa but he is not yet a world cup striker, being the highest goal goal scorer in the npfl is not enough antecedent to be at a big mundial like the world cup.

  • steven okocha 1 week ago

    Kudos, Gernot Rohr!
Nigerians are watching, go ahead and prove you are the man. Defend ur list.
    Give us Results.

  • Austin 1 week ago

It’s a good list. My worry is that when Mikel obi is not in a match, who can stabilize the midfield and give accurate and killer passes? Can Joel obi or John ogu do that? Certainly etebo cannot do that. I was thinking that ideye’s inclusion would help us. He is a team player and could frustrate the opponent’s midfield. Akpeyi should have no business in the world cup.

    • Tols 1 week ago

John Ogu or Alex Iwobi will do that. John Ogu’s game is kind of a calmer game

    • bigname 1 week ago

We’ve got kelechi who could fill in as a 10 ( creative midfielder or Joel obi or John ogu I feel this list of players released could really go far in the tournament I’m just worried about our goal keepers abilities Ā Ā

  • i will drop Nzoho, Mikel Obi, Victor Moses, Ndidi, Iwobi and Ighalo, Scroll down for the 7th name …

The Perfect Squad!! I’m Seriously High In Confidence Right Now…

  • Wow, after much anticipation, the 30 man provisional world cup list is out.
My quick SWOT analysis of the squad is:

Strength: The flanks have creativity, firepower, speed, precision and goals. The strongest department of the Super Eagles would however be the central/defensive midfield with enough to thwart any opposing attacking initiatives.

Weaknesses: The goalkeeping department may cause anxiety to some whilst there might not be enough deadly out-and-out strikers for us fans to brag about. Some would also argue that the attacking central midfield department lacks sufficient creative elements.

Opportunity: The key word here is camaraderie. As a whole, the present Super Eagles squad is far “greater than the sum of its parts”. There is a healthy mixture of youth, hunger, desire, experience and capabilities to propel the Super Eagles to the quarter-finals ā€“ all other things being equal.

Threat: That group is bad o! A highly determined and motivated Iceland; high quality and exquisite Croatia; actual World Cup contenders Argentina. If the Super Eagles somehow navigate out of this group, then the possibilities will be endless.

  • Im nw 22 and this is d first time i know of nigeria having a bribe free coach despite pressures frm d Gadaffis that call themselves agents

  • It’s sad Dele Alampasu is not making the list, and that Carl is finally out. But it’s been coming. Nice list, plus I like the fact Rohr showed he means business by just pruned down to a 30-man list, rather than the FIFA-list 35-man squad.

As for those that will not make the cut, I think it’s going to be too close to call, especially since it’s a smaller group. Everyone will fight with all he’s got and Rohr will not compromise quality for “name” or current status of player as he too has a name to protect and “sell” to the world.

Really, it’s difficult foretelling the 7 that will be dropped. I can only to an extent talk about Ajoboye being dropped in the goalkeeping department. Or all 4 could make it.

For the defence, those saying Stephen Eze probably didn’t watch CHAN. That guy was born a defender. He’s rock solid. Aina and Echiejile might be standing one leg.

In the midfield, Mikel Agu, Uche Agbo, Oghenekaro Etebo and John Ogu know they’re the ones really on trial there. Others are “sure bankers” to board the flight to Russia. Etebo might just nick it, maybe, just maybe Ogu. Yes, Ogu, packs a powerful punch in his boot. But in terms of skill and flair of a natural midfielder, he’s down in the pecking order. He’s like the Garba Lawal of today’s SE. Not very skillful, but does the dirty work and has a powerful left foot.

For the attackers, I’ll really like to watch this Lokosa guy that’s practically gatecrashing the party. But we all know it is he and Simeon Nwankwo that have to prove to Rohr that they’re up to scratch for the 2018 mundial. The other guys – barring any last minute injuries – are confirmed for the ticket to Russia.

    Count on this list..
    Francis, Ezenwa, Ajiboye,
Aina, Leon, Ekong, Shehu, Eze, Awaziem, Brown, Ebuehi
Obi, Ndidi, Etebo, Ogu, Joel, Onazi
Moses, Musa, Kelechi, Iwobi, Ighalo, Lokosa
    Standby: Simon and Omeruo
    4-1-4-1 formation will be perfect
Francis Shehu Aina Leon Ekong Ndidi Etebo Mikel Moses Musa Ighalo

  • xhuxhu 1 week ago

better squad list..Rohr has sgown he is a man of integrity, unlike what our last coach at the world cup did, dropping the likes of Brown Ideye for Uchebo Flavour..I am optimistic that with this bunch determined to make a name for themselves, they will do well..#Soarsupereagles
Good analysis by Deo but sad about your conduct last week..You and Aphilygreat are great contributors but..una fall hand ooh!Glad u apologised.

  • AkpeyiĀ shouldĀ beĀ givenĀ chanceĀ onceĀ again.Ā HeĀ isĀ good.Ā JustĀ trainĀ himĀ onĀ theĀ sideĀ ofĀ confidence.Ā IĀ seeĀ himĀ asĀ numberĀ oneĀ keeperĀ

  • Thank you Mr. Rhor for this wonderful & precise list.
I foresee a though challenge in the attack as Rhor may try to deploy Iwobi to the midfield in the absence of Mikel (or as Sub); thereby leaving Simmy & Lokosa to battle it out for the last slot in attack as others are confirmed. If not, Lokosa & Simy are out!
Agu, Agbo & Etebor are likely not making the final cut.
Awaziem, Echejile & Eze may miss out also.
Ajiboye is definitely the odd one out in the goal keeping dept. as Rhor will stick to ‘U.A.E’.
    God bless Nigeria.
Up Super Eagles; Success all the way!!!!!

  • OLISAEKEZIE 1 week ago

18 GOALS IN 19 MATCHES FOR LOKOSA. WE HAVEN’T SEEN THAT IN THE LEAGUE FOR DECADES NOW. THAT’S HARD TO OVERLOOK. IT’S NOT AS IF WE HAVE AGUERO & RONALDO AS OTHER OPTIONS IN OUR ATTACK. LEFT FOR ME, LOKOSA SHOULD BE ONE OF THE 1ST NAMES IN THE ATTACK.

  • Jensen Josh 1 week ago

I would have love to see Ambrose Efe

  • Jimi Morgan 1 week ago

Michael Agu and Chidozie Awaziem did not play well in the qualifiers. They should not have made the list. Disappointed Junior Ajayi with his track record in Egypt and Africa was dropped. Still Ā Roh has developed German emphasis on teamwork Ā and deemphasized individual stars. I am optimistic.Ā

    • In the goalkeeping department, Akpeyi has no business in the team because he has disappointed when mostly needed.

In the defense, i think the trio of Aina, Omeruo and Awaziem may not make the cut due to their dip in form in recent times for the super eagles and they have not been able to stamp their authority during their sojourn in the team. I will give Eze a 50-50 chance because of his performance in the last home based African Nations Cup and couple with his prowess of physical agility and height which could be a cover up for Balogun and Ekong.

For the midfield, Agbo and Agu are spectators on the list. Joel has a 50-50 chance of making the team because his injury has been his greatest undoing in cementing his place in the midfield.

Ajayi and Onyekuru are my surprise omissions though i expect Gernot Rohr to still include the duo since the list is provisional and the number is within the range of 35 provision. Well, Lokosa and Simeon are the two players of worry to make the team because they have little time to convince Gernot Rohr of their competence. I will prefer Lokosa to be the surprise inclusion of the final squad because of his novel achievement in the local league of 18 goals in 20 matches since the hallmark of a team is to score goals no matter the array of stars the team parades.

By and large, a good provisional squad. Good luck to team in Russia 2018!

  • Ayphillydegreat 1 week ago

I canā€™t fault this list at all. Most of the players have been together for the most part of Gernot Rohrs tenure. Dropping seven out these 30 will be the most interesting decision coming from the gaffer since he took over the mantle. I know for sure that one goalie will be dropped. That will certainly be between Ajiboye and Akpeyi because Uzoho baring any loss of form, or fitness issue will be the undisputed numero uno. Ezenwa is already an established part of the team. It will take something extraordinary to drop him if heā€™s fit. Therefore, one of Ajiboye and Akpeyi will not make the final 23 IMHO.

Two amongst the defenders will not be in Russia. Eze is an absolute prospect who reminds me of the great gentle giant Uche Okechukwu when I watched him at the CHAN tournament, but the WorldCup in Russia might be too early for him. Between him, Omeruo and Awaziem one have to make way. The crystal ball is pointing at Eze among the trio. Awaziem plays in a top five league and heā€™s been ever present all through GR tenure. Omeruo already has a WorldCup experience so I think Eze might be the one to make way here.

One of Aina, Idowu, Ebuehi and Echiejile will be dropped. I donā€™t see GR dropping any of Balogun, Ekong and Shehu. So the battle will be between Elderson and Aina or depending on the fitness level of Ebuehi. Unfortunately one of those three will not be going to Russia. Echiejile has an edge based on experience so me feel one of Ebuehi or Aina will be dropped.

Two amongst the midfielders will be dropped. My ideal midfield for the Mundial barring any fitness issue will be Mikel, Ndidi, J Obi, Etebo, Onazi and Ogu. Mikel Agu and Uche Agbo can not match any of the aforementioned six in all ramifications.

Two will be dropped amongst the strikers. Lokosa has no business in the list talk less of him making the final 23. Dude will just be coming for the experience. That Simeon Nwankwo guy is a brute of a striker. His bicycle kick goal against Juventus is still fresh in the memory. A striker with that kind of ability should be going to the WorldCup, but it will mean that one of the other established strikers/attackers in the team have to make way. Unless the coach decides to drop three defenders or three midfielders to accommodate Nwankwo in the final 23. If paired with Kelechi upfront I foresee a devastating SuperEagles strike force in Russia.

Above all, whoever makes the final 23 among these lot will have to make it on merit when hostilities begins starting from the friendly match against DR Congo. #FLY LIKE AN EAGLE INTO THE FUTURE# SUPEREAGLES FOREVER!

delighted reading you article sir. I wish Ajiboye, Omeruo is dropped and Eze with Agu, Agbo and Lokosa. This will make the balance. Sir what’s your take on this dropped names?

    • I tell you TGrace. This AyPhilly guy and Deo are great sports analysts. I can’t believe it’s the same person I’m reading. Or are there are another Ayphillygreat and Deo? Check Deo’s analysis too, always interesting, just like Ayphilly as well as some other guys here.

      • Tgrace 1 week ago

Sir Kel, I respect your reasoning. Experience speaks for the two of this great analyst

  • All these people calling Lokosa, do remember one Gambo Mohamed? Or even Ejike Uzoenyi?
You can score 100 goals in a Nigerian league that is not up to the first 100 leagues in the world, it doesn’t count.
That gets him the attention and opportunity to go to North Africa or Europe and polish his raw skills

    • Romeo 1 week ago

Guy, you just hit the nail on the head. Ganbo missed an emty net against Spain in FIFA confederation cup out of anxiety…. Guts and confidence to dare for the highest height is what we need guys

  • Tgrace 1 week ago

delighted reading you article sir. I wish Ajiboye, Omeruo, Echiejile are dropped and Eze with Agu, Agbo and Lokosa. This will make the balance. Sir what’s your take on this dropped names? I stand to be corrected on Echiejile exclusion

  • Sean 1 week ago

Hmm. …. one of Etebo,Ebuehi,Joel Obi, will be dropped. Rohr can patch Balogun and Ndidi, he won’t mind if they won’t play d first game. But for a coach to try a player with injury (against serbia)talking of Ebuehi, that means he’s highly rated by d coach. But Balogun, indidi and Joel are already recuperating but Ebuehi and Etebo are still out. I love all these players but Injury is part of football. For junior lokosa, Rohr himself said he’s good for future, he can only help him securing a better club side for now. I can’t compare a simy that scores against the likes of Chielinis, mirandas to lokosa. Can someone mention five or three solid defender from Nigerian league? Or are they not d same defenders that received 4-4 goals in finala of WAR and CHAN against Ghana and Morocco respectively? Scoring 50 goals against such defenders is no big deal. Eduok, Ugodaro and one eyimba guy have all done it before. I wish I see him play but I can never get carried away bios of Nigerian league. At least for now. Rohr! U are d man.

  • Sean 1 week ago

WAFU and CHAN tornaments i mean.

  • Tgrace 1 week ago

…and Echiejile. i stand to be corrected on Echiejile exclusion

  • John Sola 1 week ago

These may not make the squad inventually unless any injury or fitness doubt
    Ā (1) Goal keeper-Dele Ajiboye
    (2) Defender-Awaziem,ezejile
    (3) mid fielder-Uche Agbo, Agu,{obi or Etebo(injury prone)
    (1) striker-lokosa

  • Romeo 1 week ago

All I can do for now is, pray for our darling “Super Eagles” ….but I fear for our goalkeepers lack of confidence: Uzoho is better but,Ezenwa seems a bit more confidence in when in goal. It’s my hope that the likes of Ighalo starts getting themselves into good positions and score goals, cos that’s what makes a good stricker(for me,Ighalo has not given us what we want yet)….can’t comprehend what Akpeyi,Mikel Agu and Echiejile are doing in that list. Oh! Why leave out Brown Ideye? His passes are akin to Obi mikel’s killer passes.

  • MacMatthew 1 week ago

The 7 to be dropped eventually – Daniel Akpeyi, Chidozie Awaziem, Stephen Eze, Uche Agbo, Mikel Agu, Junior Lokosa & Simeon Nwankwo.

  • Bestsports. 1 week ago

I agree with these comments below!!!
    They are professional opinion. Readā€¦

I still find it difficult to understand why a Dele Aiyenugba who is very experienced and plays regularly in the is real first division is not considered. Goalkeepers get better with age and heā€™s 34.

Also one would have expected an experienced hand like Ambrose Efe who can play at Centre Back and Right/Left Full Back respectively

I also thought the coach will look in the direction of box to box midfielder Ryan Sanusi, one of the few Nigerian born footballers captaining a first division team in Europe or elsewhere. He plays week in week out for Sparta Rotterdam and is miles ahead of Mikel Agu and Uche Agbo.
Uzoho baring any loss of form, or fitness issue will be the undisputed numero uno. Ezenwa is already an established part of the team. It will take something extraordinary to drop him if heā€™s fit. Therefore, one of Ajiboye and Akpeyi will not make the final 23 IMHO.

These two guys really deserves to be in the final list, Simeone Nwankwo and Ajiboye.
    Great analyst.

  • John Cena 1 week ago

Gernot Rohr will not take 4 centre backs to the World Cup and as such 2 centre backs (Stephen Eze and probably Kenneth Omeruo) will be dropped which means Uche Agbo will most likely make the list due to his versatility since he can play both as a defensive midfielder and a centre back and moreover he has been consistent on the list of invited players since Gernot Rohr was appointed. One wing back/full back will also drop out and it’s among Elderson, Aina or Ebuehi. Only one midfielder will be dropped and it will most likely be the player that did not recover from injury among Joel Obi, Ndidi, Etebo. D goal keeping area is settled as Ajiboye will definitely drop out except there’s injury to any of the remaining 3 goal keepers. As for the attackers, I don’t see the coach dropping the players dat played through the qualifiers which means the 2 newcomers will most likely drop out. That’s my school of thought
