Bright Future, Time To Retire And Other Fallouts Of Super Eagles World Cup Exit

Bright Future, Time To Retire And Other Fallouts Of Super Eagles World Cup Exit

Following the Super Eagles’ ouster at this year’s FIFA World Cup, Completesportsnigeria.com’s JAMES AGBEREBI highlights fallouts for the team…

– FUTURE IS BRIGHT FOR THE SUPER EAGLES

The expectations on the Super Eagles going into the World Cup was very huge. Following the kind of preparations the team had, there was the belief they would surely make it out of their group.

But things did not turn out as expected as they could not go past the first round, no thanks to the heartbreaking defeat to Argentina in their final group game.

Having said that, the Super Eagles were not disgraced as they showed they could mix it up with the best which shows the future of the team is very bright.

With players like Francis Uzoho, Leon Balogun, William Troost-Ekong, Oghenekaro Etebo, Alex Iwobi, Wilfred Ndidi, and Tyronne Ebuehi all making their World Cup debuts and also impressing, it means this bunch will be a handful especially when the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers resume.

– GERNOT ROHR SHOULD STAY

Though the Super Eagles failed to progress from the group stage, it is imperative that Gernot Rohr continue his role as head coach.

It is evident that since Rohr’s appointment, there is this family bond among the players. Right from the qualifiers up until their last game at the World Cup against Argentina, it is clear for all to see that there is unity and oneness among the players that even in defeat, they are still together.

It would be an unwise decision to allow Rohr leave now because it would mean the new coach would have to start all over again, which will take the team back to square one.

– MIKEL OBI IS STILL KEY TO THE SUPER EAGLES

Another important figure in the Super Eagles that still has a role to play is the captain Mikel Obi.

Since taking over as captain of the team, Mikel has exhibited his leadership qualities which have rubbed off positively on the team.

Since it is a young team, it is important Mikel still sticks around to guide them especially now that the 2019 AFCON qualifiers are just around the corner.

He might not play regularly, but bbeing on the bench and offering advice would go a long way in helping the team grow.

– IT SHOULD BE CURTAINS FOR SOME PLAYERS IN THE SUPER EAGLES

The 2018 FIFA World Cup made it crystal clear that some players have no business in the Super Eagles anymore.

Players like Odion Ighalo, Elderson Echiejile and Ogenyi Onazi should say their byes from the team as it is glaring now they are over the hill.

Aside from Ighalo who played in all the group stage games and did not impress, the duo of Echiejile and Onazi were not even considered for selection.

The fact that Rohr decided to switch to inexperienced players like Etebo, Ebuehi and Bryan Idowu at critical times when he could have turned to these experience heads is an indication their days in the team are numbered and they should do the honourable thing and retire from international football.

– SUPER EAGLES WORLD CUP EXPERIENCE KEY GOING INTO 2019 AFCON QUALIFIERS

Currently the Super Eagles’ position in their 2019 AFCON qualifying group does not look pretty, there should be a turnaround when the race for Cameroon kicks off.

With the experience garnered at the World Cup, it will be difficult to stop the Super Eagles from picking one of the two tickets from their qualifying group for the 2019 AFCON.

With due respect to South Africa, Seychelles and Libya who are in the Super Eagles AFCON qualifying group, they do not come close to the likes of Croatia, Argentina and Iceland.

COMMENTS

WORDPRESS: 41
  • Thank you James.
I wish Gernot Rohr can see this and stop wasting spaces on the bench.
For Now, In Rohr I trust.

  • Trust Naija to leave things to the very last minute. And before you know it we are applying last minute dot come strategy again…

    This is Nigeria!!!

See as my people dey crying now.

Nation cup campaign should start in earnest and the NFF should endeavour to invite fit capable players because it was so obvious that majority of the players that represented us were not fit all and they have no business in the team. Proper scrutiny should commences now for once in our agenda.

God bless NFF, God bless Eagles and God bless the beautiful people of Nigeria.

Nice write up. James. 100% correct

  • Sabby 5 months ago

Personally, I think Gernot Right has done a quite impressive job but it’s really hi-time to drop some old players off as experience alone no longer play a major role in football but technique do. players I suggest should be dropped are
    1)Odion Ighalo
    2)Elderson Echiejile
    3)Ikechukwu Ezenwa
    4)Ogenyi Onazi and possibly
    5)Mikel Obi

    • Why Ezenwa. He qualified you guys for the world cup and now because you think an Uzoho has appeared who by the way lacks tactical vision, you want to throw him away.

Nigerians sha! Amnesia is your biggest problem. You have forgotten so quickly the Goalkeeping nightmare you were in before the world cup.

this is the time to let onazi, ejiejile, joel obi, ighalo etc to go. We should bring in chidiebere nwakali, Muhammed musa, kelechi nwakali, victor osimhen, Henry onyekuru, awoniyi etc. These are players for the future depending on their present club performances. Our friendly match with athletico Madrid in Uyo showed a lot. Mikel can hang on a bit. We need an explosive, fast and creative midfield with the nwakali brothers, a functional wing with Mohammed musa and onyekuru and some other vibrant players. With these, we’ll have a bright future.

    • Onaigbuki 5 months ago

You are spot on Austin. I agree that we should start now to build the synergy and hardness as well as experience.

No time to waste. It was also a learning curve for Rhor. He was indecisive in many occasions and found wanting in talking the boys into giving their best. He kept on expressing the mightiness of other teams
That resulted in our boys showing too much respect to teams we could have beaten easily, like Croatia and Argentina. He should know that most of the team ratings were on paper. He only needed to boost the aggression in the boys to get result. Look at how south Korea humiliated Germany. I think Rhor has to believe in the boys. I am not satisfied with his quality.

    • Thanks Austin… another player we need… Kingsley Sokari. if you jam dat guy with Etebo hmmm…

  • Barth 5 months ago

Nigeria has talents all over, yes the future is brighter, I respect samson Siasia for discovering hidden talents. As it is now, super eagles still need Obi mikel as captain. Imagine talents like Wilfred Ndidi, Etebo, Uzoho, moses Simon, Tyrone Ebuehi, Ola Aina, Iwobi, Azubuike Okechukwu, musa Muhammed, nwakali brothers, isaac success, iheanacho, Samuel chukwueze, Kalu of genk, Dennis bonaventure, Adegbenro, Osimen,Onyekuru and so on, the good thing here is, all these players are below 25 years. These talents can go places. GR take note.

  • akpokiniovo sunday 5 months ago

Bonding is alright, but when such does not have impact on the outcome of crucial games, then something drastic should be done. The coach lacked the tactical approach in the match against Argentina. Five minutes to the end of the March, the coach should have known what to do.

  • Djeniko 5 months ago

@Abraham AUDU na was for you. You saw how Kenneth Omurua played. He was a handful for the attackers except for the Messi goal. He should have seen Messi start the run. Apart from that Kenneth Omurua should be part of the new Super Eagles. John Ogu should be in the new Super Eagles. After the Victor Moses equaliser, the coach should have brought in Ogu and Tronne Ebuehi to help the defence and midfield. Ogu is a hard tackling dude. As for Joel Obi, I can’t really assess him, so I leave that to the coach. The others, Onazi, Echiejile will be doing themselves and Nigeria a good thing if they retired.

  • Chidi 5 months ago

At James spot on,let us scout for a good left back good 11 as for 9 GR is already working on oshime, any body here saying that GR should be sacked is not a super eagles faithful yea to some folks de coach made a costly mistake at the critical moment ok shall we crucify him?lets look at what he has done so far with d SE n encourage him to me he has done pretty well if not for any thing we can now sit n watch SE play with commitment, passion n a defined pattern, in GR I trust

  • Presh 5 months ago

If Libya South Africa and co do not come close to Iceland Argentina and Croatia which i agree, do Africa have a lovely smooth pitch, smooth grass for good football, that is why the qualifying is so hard, and the likes of shehu always shine in bad pitches and cannot deliver in good field. So we may still suffer if African as a whole do not come together and see to it, because right now the world cup is not by country country alone, its about representing Africa, African football leaders should please see to it.

Lets reinvent Siasia, give him the same tools as was given to this foreign couch. l am positive that Siasia will outperform this foreign couch. Rohr admitted in his own words, that he knew that Iheanacho was not in shape and yet, he started him against a World class team like Argentina with Messi. Why, in the World would he not start Iwobi who scored a wonderful goal against England and in shape. Why, in the World did Rohr not park the Bus in the last 10 minutes of the Games against Argentina when all we needed was a draw. Gabon National Federation fired Rohr for this same reason, that is. his inability to read matches and take the right decision as when needed . A couch with such deficiency and mindset cannot go far. With this foreign couch, he will keep making the same mistakes and expects different results. Siasia took Nigeria to Olympics 2 year ago, the results is there for anybody to view in spite of the way and manner he was illtreated and arriving to Brazil in a shabby Airplane and even late to the stadium.
The stability that was evident in the Nigeria Camp in Russia was acutely attributed to the efficiency of the current NFF Management style rather than Rohr’s. The foreign couch himself was paid 6 months in advance, The Players were treated as an adults and in a Professional fashion, they all naturally responded positively.

All we are saying is, bring Siasia in, treat him as you would treat a pro, respect his players and give him the free hand as you gave this foreign couch, Siasia will not let the Nation down. Ladies & Gentlemen, how many times did Rohr have to go to Aso Rock to beg for his own salary that was 8 months over due or the players bonus that were never paid during this World Cup like what happened to our late Steve Kashi during the World cup in Brazil.?

Never has the our Govt and the NFF treated a couch, any couch, so generously and got a disservices in retune from a couch like Rohr. Let him go. We will get a better return for our money from a Nigerian born Couch, everything being equal.

    My real Name is:

thank you sir. you are correct. Rohr just had to bring in Ogu against Argentina and that game woukd have been ours.

  • Djeniko 5 months ago

@Edoman, I respect your opinion on this Siasia guy but don’t you think he is not what we need for the Super Eagles? He has tinkered with the Super Eagles before. He failed woefully. Abysmal performance then. So what is new about Siasia that you are clamoring for his return. I believe 99.9% of comments will outrightly reject him, especially when they remember that he tried his hands on a club side and it was a the same abysmal performance, total failure. @Edoman I thought you are grounded in football matters. But I am seriously having another view of you. Note: it is ‘coach'(trainer) not “couch”(bed). Sometimes the dictionary can help.

  • Wole Star 5 months ago

@Djeniko , it seems you are suffering from African mentality (inferiority complex) @Edoman came up with brillant analysis and here you were twisting fact and condemming Siasia who given half incentives of what was given G Roh will perform wonder ,in what way did Siasia performed poorly ? Even when Siasia failed to qualify Super Eagles the other time , he did not loose any match home and away, the only loos then was by another Coach before he took over and if not for the unfortunate last minutes draw and the then useless nff that always worked against him by supporting superbrat Enyama who eventually dribbled himself out of super eagles Siasia would have done great things with Super Eagles. (Have you ever seen where a country officials celebrated non qualifications to a tornament by a coach ? That was exactly what nff did then , the record is there Siasia remains the best coach in Nigeria today , G Roh who was sacked by ordinary Gaborn for a silly mistake still repeated same mistake against Argentina, if a coach that got 6montns salary upfront, got contract extension could only manage one win against first comer and then butted out of the tournament and yet getting your praises as if that is the best thing to have happened to Nigeria football, what a shame it can only happen in Nigeria where you over support foreigners and get your own coach badly exposed , what a shame , in the last Olympic Siasia singlehandedly arranged for chatted flights that brought his team to the tournament just in time before the kick off ,he went begging another country to help him out just to prove a point who always prefer he fail.
Siasia is better than this your overrated and over pampered the so called coach called Genet Roh

  • I very much agree with you than the write up itself. Rohr should go, Argentina was an expose, with 5mins to go we were still attacking as if we needed a goal instead of locking the shop and come to think of it, his substitions seems more of desperation than tactical.
I have never been a fan of SiaSia, but he managed a squad to the olympics on unfavourable conditions and did well.

Even that young goal keeper needs to be given a break too, he is not our goalkeeping messiah, same too with Odion ‘miss it’ Ighalo who should be commended for wearing the 9 jersey. As for Onazi and his likes enough said…

    • Ayphillydegreat 5 months ago

Not many goalkeeper can deny Higuain and Lewandowski one on one. At 19 he saved a goal bound Messi free kick. He was calm and composed for his age. He is Nigeria’s goalkeeper for the next 10 to 15 years.

My people I’m really enjoyed this conversation. For me, coach Rohr must goooooooooooo. He has failed and has nothing to prove to you and I anymore.

Yes, Mr. Edoman of New Jersey, well spoken bro. I’m 100% agreed with you. Everything went smoothly for us in this year world cup but we did not have a sound coach period.

The only thing that coach Rohr has that any other Africa coaches doesn’t, is “unity”. If our local coaches can have this kind of quality, mentality, Africans are ready to go then.

If NFF can give coach Siasia this kind of opportunities that coach Rohr had, Super Eagles will rule the world. Mr. Rohr have done well and he can’t give what he doesn’t have. It’s time to let go of him.

Upon what the coach of Germany has achieved for his country, his country FA about to fire him. So, if we all really loves our beloved country, we must ask the NFF to replace coach Rohr with indigenous coach.

With all the supports and all the necessary things the coach would need to excel, if NFF can provide these, I’m pretty sure that Eagles would performing more than the current Super Eagles team that coach Rohr took to the world cup without making it out of the group stage.

This is a total failure. One win out of the three matches, what can we call that??? For me omo9ja, I don’t know. So therefore, Super Eagles needed a sound indigenous coach. God bless Nigeria!!!

I totally agree with the last three contributors that Rohr must go. Prior to Rohr appointment as SE coach, His percentage win was 51% in his previous coaching contracts in Africa. corruption was the only motivation why Pinnick hired him. Siasia is better than Rohr because he has succeeded in very harsh condition.

  • Ayphillydegreat 5 months ago

I don’t know why we tend to be deceiving ourselves. We should at least be happy that we have a team that will only continue to be stronger. With more quality additions the SuperEagles will soon recapture the world’s imagination like they did in the 90s. All these team needs is a proven goal scorer and a solidly skillful ball playing midfielder.

Many youngsters are still coming up over the next 3 years. If we can continue with the trends of this present NFF board. Nigeria will be better for it in the long run. Instead of quick fix all the time, let us build a team to be proud of for the first time since the 1990s. I’m sure if kept together with the AFCON coming up next June these SuperEagles will continue to evolve. #FLY LIKE AN EAGLE INTO THE FUTURE.

    • David 5 months ago

I wish we all Nigerian understand the word reality and fact and stop playing to to the gallery, you have spoken well man, success in football takes time not the quick fix or otherwise known as fire brigade approach that we tend to favour in the country, this is not only in football or sports alone its cover all our fabric of live, it’s been more like our Identity, Even when history has shown that it’s doesn’t work we still persist, with due respect to to all that comments here, how long does it take Clem Westernof to build the glorious 90s squad, how many of those player that he started with made it to the World Cup but the most important thing was there was consistency in the team play with later translate into performance that made the world took note, from a 5:1 thrashing of Algeria to a respectable 1:0 lost to the same Team at that same tournament, then going all the way to the last four playing Beautiful football two year later in Senegal before eventually made to the podium in 94,in within those period there addition and subtraction of players until the right balance was gotten, my people time is what the coach need to get the right balance and trust me he will get it right if rally around him. So much to add but time is of the essence, thanks all.

  • Patrick 5 months ago

The only changes we need in super eagles is to drop ighalo , onazi, joel obi and echejile. We should invite players such as kelechi nwakali, kayode, sadiq umar, Henry from Anderlecht to join the team. We have to retain the coach. We dont need samson siasia.

  • Sureseye 5 months ago

Give almost any of our coach these resource Rohr had at his disposal and they’d outperform him. I respect Rohr but truth must be told that he is not good enough. Another report says Musa insists he could play against Argentina so he was reluctant removing him (and we all saw that from Musa’s face when he left the pitch). The question is not if Musa should have been substituted but that the coach lacks the ability to stamp his foot.

And the case of using underperforming players  is unbelievable. Rohr must go!

Quoting Seye Omidiora – Standing by one’s beliefs isn’t necessarily a bad thing, but wanting to repeat the same things over and over when they’re not working is a red flag.

  • @Omo9ja,Ayphillydegreat,,Knet,sole Star & Sureseye you all have taken the word out of my mouth because I have been sounding this note of warning about this Coach before this world cup commence to his tactical ineptitude but it all come to nothing so here we are again talking about continuity if for the players Capital Yes Except few legs that suppose to be dropped which you all has highlighted and I agree totally but this man Garnot Rohr its Capital No No if we really know what it means to archive Greatness and the fear Factor that use to grip our opponents before when facing Super Eagle in any Match. In our match against Argentina
what did the white Messiah Coach of Super Eagle do to win the match That was left with 4 minutes of play to move us into round of sixteenth Atleast to save our record? absolutely nothing , what was Idowu still doing in the pitch since he’s not coping well anymore? Tyrone & Iwobi is in the bench, John Ogu would have bring in fresh ideas with fresh Energy in the Defense while introduction Iwobi/Simi Nwankwo would have slowed down their Attack on us, this strategy is what was needed to see out the remaining minute’s but like I have said before this man Garnot Rohr is working against Nigeria by bringing in ineffective Ighalo that can’t even score in open net, the same way he dash Croatia three points with his Tactical ineptitude. We can’t afford to have a 65 years old Coach Experimenting with our player’s in a Competition at a Global stage, This same Man lead us to our first home defeat to South Africa for the next year Afcon qualifier.Mr Rohr has no future in our football and has nothing to offer us more than the damage he has already cursed us except Amaju pinnick will form his own separate NFF to employ him .

  • Meanwhile just to add that every competition has it’s tradition and I have viewed this year world cup matches in terms of our play and that of other countries and realized that winning the world cup has a lot to do with mental strength & Tactical approach for instance while you will see some European & South American players falling down and making the most out of it during crucial stages of their matches to their Favour especially when there team is under severe attack from their opponents there by slowing down the tempo of their opponents that is where patriotism comes into play from the technical Crew of the team because no foreign machinery Coach is going to do that for you all he Care’s about is his salary and that explains why no country has ever won the would cup with a foreign coach till date. NFF give our own Coaches the same support given to Garnot Rohr then the world is ours to conquer ,We have a team now that can do it with a maximum support. 2022 is rolling. Happy weekend Guy’s.

  • Djeniko 5 months ago

@Wole Star, it is you that is having African mentality. Old fashioned. Look forward instead of backwards. I guess you can read well since you can write. My point is this: give all the help to Siasia, he will still perform abysmally. Give that help to another coach but not Siasia. Which club is he coaching now. None!!!!!!!!! If he is that good, why are clubs not pursuing him. There are better coaches in Nigeria today but calling Siasia to tinker the Super Eagles again is like calling Arsene Wenger to come back to Arsenal after 10 years. It is laughable indeed. @Edoman’s suggestion is good but my query is why call Siasia who was the worse coach to handle the senior team ever. Maybe he is good with the Olympic and other junior teams but never, never, never with the senior team, the Super Eagles. Make you get brain @Wole Star.

    • Siasis is good. He rejected club assignments because of treatments. He is a class coach and won’t take nonsense. It is why NFF does not like him. Any competition or coaching opprotunity, Siasia discovers new players that can compete with the rest of the world and they last for long. The likes of Etebo, Usman mohammed, Sadiq Umar etc were discoveered by Siasia. He is the best indigenous coach we have now in Nigeria even will perform better than Rohr. His previous failure with the Eagles were just half stint. He was hired in the middle after some defeats to save the team from not qualifying and never planned well.

  • Chidi 5 months ago

My beloved brothers together we stand divide we fall, success is process oriented that requires lots of planing, ups n downs, let’s stop all these argument n stand in one accord let GR stay 2019 afcon then we will access him properly believe it or not if we fire him now n hire a new coach d possibility of qualifying  for 2019 afcon is 30% n d risk is not worth,d situation will be similar to oliseh/siasia,wen oliseh dumped d national team n siaone was asked to step in as d interim coach n he failed instead of using d players on ground he brought in his own set of players xperimenting in high tensed match n we lost to Egypt ,guys lets be patient a bit n pretend like we don’t know what we r doing n watch GR from now till June next yr,GR is a wounded lion now let’s watch his response pls guys

  • coach Stanley 5 months ago

sure some player must call it a day, but I suggest that the coach GR must go an improve his tactical abilities. he doesn’t read the game very well. wen the Argentina brought in two attacking players an you need the draw u must throw in two defensive players too into the midfield.

  • Bomboy 5 months ago

Mr. Rohr is very organised and professional, but He is lacking in his technical ability and also lacking the mentality of a winner. He didn’t expect us to go far in the tournament, and that is what happened.

If we let him stay till 2019 and then decide to let him go, we will be back to our fire brigade approach very close to 2022 World Cup.

Remember that age is not also on his side. It is time for him to go!

  • @ Chidi Patience yes, but the man you are advocating for doesn’t have what it takes to take us far even the AFCON you are referring to he has already failed in his first attempt by donating three points to South Africa here in our backyard in Uyo. Biko what we are saying at this early stage is that the players are there already on the ground ready to do battle but lacks efficient handler pilot the coaching department and we have home grown Coaches that can do the Job perfectly well more than what Rohr is doing given the kind of unprecedented supports he reiceves all through which no respective NFF Administration has ever given to our local Coaches’ Rather they will work for their failures imidiately handing over the Job them and even went ahead shamelessly to celebrate our Non qualification with some rented journalists whom they use in spreading their bidding to Occupy OFF Job for selfish interest only.Pls what is Amaju pinnick doing with this Good for Nothing Coach that’s killing our pattern of play other than personal interest ,Is it to lift AFCON that our own Coach has not done before or to lift the World Cup that no Foreign Coaches has never lifted till ďate ? Just wait for the dust to settle you will hear about the reckless spending by Amaju pinnick in Russia to various FAs Boss he personally invited to Russian to sure up his re’election campaign from the money meant for the development of football in this country . Gernot Rohr is a misfit for Super Eagle to fly, Earlier he pack his bags the better for us.Thanks.

  • lotomaximis 5 months ago

if the type of support that gernot rohr enjoyed was given to keshi’s team of 2014 world cup, they would have done wonders.remember players boycotted training because of unpaid bonuses prior to meeting France in the round of 16. My opinon is gernot Rohr thank you for your service, but is time to go.let give our indigenous coaches the chance and support to succed.

  • Eric Ibekwe 5 months ago

It is also important that players that are not playing in competitive leaques should no longer be invited to National Teams. If Ighalo is that good he won’t be playing in China leaque.

  • Chidi 5 months ago

Wat ighalo failed to do mgbape did, everyone is blaming GR as if he is d one playing d football, with all d talent we have at USA 94 Wat did westerhof do to salvage d situation few minis to end d match when Roberto Baggio scored,of if not that Brazil substituted Ronaldo at Atalanta 96 thinking that d game is over we couldn’t ve won that match,my point is this is football things like this happen GR must notgo to every ones house to seek for advice ontactical formation, some guys here r clamouring for his sack n for siaone to be hired u guysthink d under 23 is same with super eagles, let’s leave d decision for nff n for AP he deserves a second tenure cos he has done pretty well, people must criticize u no matter how hard u try to do d right thing kudos to the nff,SE though we did not get to our xpectation but we ve learnt some valuable lesson n will keep pushing until we get it right

To all those, saying Gernot Rohr, at 65 years is old. Oscar Tabarez, is 71 years old walks with the aid of crutches and has been with Uruguay for 12 years.

  • Thanks, it is very informative
