Brother: Mikel Keen To Lead Super Eagles To World Cup Semi-Finals

By Adeboye Amosu: Heartland goalkeeper Ebele Obi has backed his younger brother Mikel Obi to lead Nigeria to as far as the semi-finals at the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia, Completesportsnigeria.com reports.

Captain Mikel played a key role in Nigeria’s qualification for the global soccer fiesta, scoring two goals in the qualifiers.

Much will be expected from the former Chelsea midfielder in Russia as the Super Eagles attempt to make history by becoming the first African country to make it to at least the semi-finals at the mundial.

“Myself and my brother (Mikel) have spoken so much about the World Cup and he is determined to put up a show at the competition,” Ebele told CSN.

“Winning the World Cup seems a tall order for African teams but he is keen to see the Super Eagles make to the semi-finals at least.

” The team is in good hands with Gernot Rohr in the saddle and we have the players to do the job too.”

The Super Eagles will open their campaign on June 16 against Croatia at the Kaliningrad Stadium.

The three-time African champions will then slug it out with Iceland at the Volgodrad Arena on June 22, and Argentina on June 26 at the Krestovsky Stadium, St Petersburg.

  • Ebele, please don’t change the vibration whirling in the Nigerian air now: Nigeria will win the WC, period. If you think otherwise, keep it to yourself, don’t sell it. This poverty mentality has stifled Nigerian soccer for years with disastrous conducts by past NFFs. In 2013, they bought tickets for the team to return after the group stage of AFCON. The late Keshi stubbornly pushed on and we won the cup. Our current NFF is very progressive. Let’s not give them the wrong message. Even some Ex-Se players believe the present squad will bring the cup to Africa. What tall order is it for a well-trained team to win the World Cup? Bet other players who win it don’t have 2 heads each, see? What is the point participating if you don’t desire to win? Wise Napoleon Hill said it all: DESIRE is the first step to attaining ANY goal! The universe gives out what is honestly requested from her. If 180 million believe, pray, work hard to assist the players and expect the cup to be awarded to them, they’ll get it.

Incidentally we need a sound goalkeeper for the team. Ebele, what’s your take on that? where should we cast our net for one?
