By Johnny Edward: President Muhammadu Buhari has sent a congratulatory message to the home-based Super Eagles for reaching the final of the 2018 African Nations Championship (CHAN) for the first time, in three appearances at the competition, Completesportsnigeria.com (CSN) reports.
Nigeria laboured to their first ever final at the tournament, beating Sudan 1-0 in Marrakech on Wednesday. Gabriel Okechukwu scored the only goal of the game in the 16th minute after he raced onto a pass from Anthony Okpotu.
Okechukwu, won the Man-of-the-Match award at the end the game for his sterling performance in his first start at the tournament.
President Buhari tweeted from through his official Twitter handle, congratulating the team and stating that Nigerians are looking forward to the team taking on hosts, Morocco in the final on Sunday. Morocco defeated Libya 3-1 to reach the final.
“Congratulations to the home-based Super Eagles on their CHAN semi-final victory over Sudan tonight. Millions of Nigerians are rejoicing with you tonight, and eagerly looking forward to the final on Sunday. We are proud of you!,” Buhari tweeted via his Twitter handle, @MBuhari.
The Home Eagles have scored seven goals and conceded two in five games in the tournament and will be without Ifeanyi Ifeanyi in the final against Morocco at the Casablanca’s Stade Mohamed V on Sunday evening due to suspension.
