Nigeria's U-23 Eagles striker Taiwo Awoniyi is desirous of scoring goals at the CAF U-23 Cup of Nations that will help Nigeria qualify for the men's football event of the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, but insists the team's qualification is uppermost, Completesportsnigeria.com reports
Speaking with Completesportsnigeria.com from Senegal, Awoniyi admits that as a striker he wants to score goals but adds that victory in Senegal irrespective of whose goals helped in achieving that is all that matters.
"As a striker, I want to score goals. I hope to do so in this tournament. And I want to say amen to all the prayers of those who wish me well.
"But what matters most is that we qualify for the Olympics. That's what counts most, than personal glory.
"Preparation for our first game against Mali was fine. By the grace of God, we shall win," Awoniyi who plays for FSV Frankfurt in the Bundesliga 2 (lower division in Germany) but on loan from English Premier League side Liverpool told Completesportsnigeria.com.
Nigeria hope to get a good start in their game against Mali this evening. Mali are making their first appearance at the U-23 Cup of Nations.
