Nigeria is one of several African countries being considered to bid for the hosting rights of the 2025 IAAF World Championships, according to the President of the Confederation of African Athletics Hamad Kalkaba Malboum.
The continent has never hosted the championship since it began in 1983, but Malboum believes many African countries have the capacity to stage the biennial event.
“We are talking with Kenya, South Africa, Nigeria, Algeria, Egypt, Morocco – those countries have the facilities,” Malboum, who is from Cameroon, said in a BBC Africa report on Wednesday.
“I have very positive sounds from some of them.
“People said that Africa could not host the World Cup in football, but we did it very successfully.”
South Africa successfully hosted the football World Cup in 2010, while Morocco played host to an IAAF Diamond League leg this year.
The CAA head is counting on the support of the International Association of Athletics Federations for Africa to host the global event.
“President Coe is supporting the fact that Africa could host the World Championships,” he said.
