Nigerian defender Semi Ajayi was on target for League One club Rotherham United but it was not enough as they lost 2-1 away to newly promoted English Premier League club Huddersfield Town in round two of the Carabao Cup, which was called the EFL Cup last season, on Wednesday.
Ajayi, 23, who featured for the Flying Eagles at the Toulon Invitation Tournament in France prior to the 2013 FIFA U-20 World Cup in Turkey, put Rotherham United 1-0 up two minutes into the game.
But two second half goals from Philip Billing and Joe Lolley in the 52nd and 54th minutes respectively secured the win for Huddersfield.
At the St. Mary’s Stadium, recuperating Super Eagles goalkeeper Carl Ikeme’s Championship club Wolverhampton Wanderers stunned EPL club Southamption 2-0.
Danny Batth and Donovan Wilson both scored for Wolves on 67 and 87 minutes respectively to send Southampton crashing out of this season’s League Cup competition.
At the Bet 365 Stadium, Stoke City made light work of League One club Rochdale following a convincing 4-0 win.
A brace from Joe Allen in the 16th and 42nd minutes and a goal each from Peter Crouch in the 29th minute, and Ramadan Sobhi on 80 minutes, guaranteed Stoke’s passage into the next round.
In other Carabao Cup games on Wednesday, West Ham defeated League Two side Cheltenham Town 2-0 away thanks to goals from Diafra Sakho (40th minute) and Andre Ayew (43rd minute), while goals from Jack Cork (27th minute) and Robert Brady (45th minute) helped EPL side Burnley beat League One club Blackburn Rovers 2-0.
