CHAMPIONS! Complete Sports Dismantle TVC To Regain MerryBet/SWAN Cup

By Sulaiman Alao and Hanifat Mustapha:

Complete Sports have emerged as the winners of the 2017/2018 Merrybet/SWAN Cup tournament.

The 2012 champions reclaimed their trophy with a 1-0 win over TV Continental at the legacy pitch of the National Stadium, Surulere, Lagos on Friday.

Complete Sports, full of superstars like Sulaiman Alao, Julius Ojeagbase and Wale Ajose all of whom were in the triumphant 2012 team, totally overran TVC but showed the television boys some mercy by scoring just one goal.

Since one goal was enough to win anyway, the Okota Lions decided not to humiliate their opponents in the final.

The Group Managing Director of Complete Sports publishers Complete Communications Ltd and retired captain of the Okota Lions, Alhaji Mumini Alao, was very pleased after witnessing yet another successful outing from his team.

“We always win and our team particularly this year was very well prepared,” a beaming Alhaji Alao told Completesportsnigeria.com moments after the final.

“The last time we won was 2012 and five years after we’ve retrieve our trophy. The the preparation was very hard but we’ve reaped the rewards.

“We didn’t lose any game all the way to the final. In fact, before the tournament we played friendly games and did well, and that showed we were ready for the competition, so we are not surprised. We are very happy we are winning again and we thank our supporters.”

Meanwhile Unilag FM defeated The Nation 1-0 to claim third place.

The other highlight of the grand finale was the much-publicised novelty match between Sports Editors/Veterans and Friends United by Sports (FUBS)  tagged ‘Mother of all finals’ which took the centre stage before the final proper. The game indeed met and surpassed expectations to the delight of thousands of football fans at the stadium.
In a highly entertaining game, the FUBS captained by Chairman of the Nigeria Football Federation Amaju Pinnick defeated an SEV side skippered by Mitchel Obi by 1-0. Pinnick alongside  Chris Green, Shehu Dikko and Deji Tinubu were the cynosure of all eyes and they surprisingly thrilled the crowd with their football skills while former Super Eagles goalkeeper Peter Rufai was a joy to watch in the goalpost, thwarting several goalbound shots from the SEV side to the delight of the fans. Former Eagles stars like Mutiu Adepoju, Austin Eguavoen, Jonathan Akpoborie, Edema Fuludu also featured for the FuBS alongside Ali Baba, Liameed Gafar and several others.
The Sports Editors/Veterans also had stars such as Managing Director of Complete Communications Limited, Alhaji Mumini Alao, playing alongside Dr. Larry Izamoje, Harry Iwuala, Mozez Praiz, Fred Edoreh, Wale Joseph, Shina Okeleji and others all exhibited great skills but it was not enough to prevent the loss as they succumbed to the lone goal scored by the ‘Headmaster’ Adepoju.
Sponsors of the competition, Merrybet Online Sports Betting Company, provided kits for all the finalists and also threw a closing party for the event at the SWAN Secretariat.
