The 2015/2016 UEFA Champions League group stages kick off on Tuesday with four Nigerians expected to feature for their respective clubs.
In Tuesday’s fixture, Super Eagles assistant captain, Ahmed Musa, should be in the CSKA Moscow line-up when they take on Group B foes Wolfsburg inside the Volkswagen Arena.
Musa, who has been impressive for CSKA since the start of the season, was instrumental in their qualification for the group stages.
After playing 2-2 in Russia against Sparta Praha, in the qualifying round, CSKA, against all the odds, beat Sparta 3-2 away, with Musa grabbing a brace
And in the play-offs, Musa turned out to be the saviour once again for CSKA against Sporting Lisbon in the second leg which they won 3-1, providing an assist before scoring the decisive third goal to end the tie 4-3 on aggregate.
Wednesday’s fixtures will see the duo of John Mikel Obi and Nosa Igiebor come face-to-face when Maccabi Tel Aviv travel to London to face stuttering Chelsea at Stamford Bridge in Group G.
Chelsea who are the English Premier League champions, are not having the best of times following a series of poor results. Their latest setback was Saturday’s 3-1 away defeat against Everton, with Mikel making his first start of the season.
For Igiebor, he played a significant role in Maccabi’s qualification for the group stages. He scored Maccabi’s goal in their 2-1 away loss to Hibernian in the qualifiers. He scored a goal again in Maccabi’s 5-1 return leg win.
In the play-off game against Swiss side Basel, Igiebor was in action in both legs, as Maccabi advanced on the away goals rule.
And in the GHELAMCO-Arena in Belgium, Gent will welcome Ligue 1 side, Olympique Lyon, in a Group H clash, with Super Eagles winger, Moses Simon, expected to feature.
Simon played a key role in Gent winning the Belgian league last season, after he scored seven goals in 17 appearances.
The former Trencin player was on target for the Super Eagles in their 2-0 win against Niger Republic in an international friendly game.
