Chelsea Hail Omeruo For Impressive Showing In Super Eagles Win Vs Iceland

By Adeboye Amosu:

English Premier League club Chelsea have heaped plaudits on their Nigerian defender Kenneth Omeruo following his impressive showing in the country’s 2-0 win against Iceland in a Group D fixture at the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia, Completesportsnigeria.com reports.

Ahmed Musa grabbed both goals as the Super Eagles bounced back from the 2-0 loss to Croatia in their first game.

Omeruo was handed his first start of the competition by Super Eagles head coach, Gernot Rohr, as part of a three- man defence and he rewarded the German coach with a fine performance.

Though he had a hand in the penalty conceded by Tyronne Ebuehi which was missed by Gyfil Sigurdsson, Omeruo did well in helping the Super Eagles ward off the threat of the Iceland forwards.

”What a performance from @omeruo22! 💪 #NGAISL,” reads a tweet on the club’s official Twitter handle.

The 24-year-old joined Chelsea in January 2012 but is yet to make his official debut for the club.

Instead, he has spent time on loan at five different clubs; ADO Den Haag in the Dutch Eredivisie, Middlesbrough ( English Championship), Kasimpasa and Alanyaspor (Turkish outfits).

He has been capped 38 times by Nigeria.

Omeruo, thank you for your service to the Nation today. You were just too good and l am positive that Chelsea will bring you in now to join your compatriot our Moses in playing for the Club

He was incredibly pivotal to our defense today. I can categorically say he was the reason we won the match. The headed clearance that led to Musa’s first goal and the unorthodox assist for the second. Like one of my erstwhile forumite will say “Kenneth Nesta Omeruo”! He brought the physicality that was much needed to the SuperEagles back line. #FLY LIKE AN EAGLE INTO THE FUTURE#

Argentina are going to throw kitchen sink and plus more at Nigeria on Tuesday. I just hope the boys are ready for compact defending and stay put under tremendous pressure and counter attack when opportunity comes. This is how they can win. I wish them the best

  • I have always rated Ken Omeruo. I still remember his header that sparked a revival against Germany in his U-17 days.

I remember posting here that his inclusion in an 3-man defence could be pivotal for the Super Eagles and so it proved.

Well done Ken and keep improving.

Don’t mess with the winning team. Iwobi is a spoiler though and should be benched thru the games. Rather Omeruo I see the superlative performance of Balogun. That guy is the rock of our defence.

Whao!!! That defence against Iceland was sweet because it was a “Nigerian jollof defence” can’t you people feel the aroma?

It was a mixture of yellow and black and white defenders, that is called Nigerian jollof defence, no longer Oyinbo wall.
