Chukwu: No Cause For Alarm, Super Eagles Will Be Ready For World Cup

By Adeboye Amosu:

Former Super Eagles head coach Christian Chukwu is confident the team will get better and also have the potential to have a respectable outing at the 2018 FIFA World Cup, reports Completesportsnigeria.com.

Gernot Rohr’s charges put up a below-par showing in Tuesday’s 2-0 friendly defeat against Serbia and also struggled in the 1-0 win against Poland last week.

The performance especially against the Serbs has cast doubts on how far the team can go in Russia with two-time world champions, Argentina, Croatia and Iceland their group stage opponents.

Chukwu however believes there is no need to worry yet and stated that the team have what it takes to do well at the Mundial.

”I don’t think there is need to press the panic botton yet. Friendly matches are meant to prepare the team and work on the weaknesses,” Chukwu told CSN.

“It is good we are noticing some of these things now as there is still enough chance to work on them.

“There is enough quality in the team to do well at the World Cup and I believe we’ll get it right.”

Coach Gernot Rohr must work on team organization, bite and flair movement, movement on and off the ball especially in opposition half. “Their ball circulation and distribution was very poor, and we could not even string four, five passes complete in the opponent’s half. So, I think if they can work on these aspects, the team will do better in subsequent matches, the team needs quality replacement for the first eleven. Injuries or lost of form are a daily occurrence in football so they be ably ready to do a good job at all times. Too many work still to do. My verdict is Nigeria ain’t good enough for a second round spot. No deception.

@bestsports, so in ‘your expert opinion’ who in our group is good for the knock out stages? Is Argentina that got hammered 6-1 by Spain, Croatia that was beaten by Peru, or Iceland that lost to Peru and Mexico 3-1 and 3-0?

We have got three weeks of training camp before the world cup hopefully in these time the gaffer would have ample time to get the team playing with better cohesion and also imbibing his philosophy and strategies for the world cup.
Rohr has yet to have the luxury of long camping so let’s see what he does with the boys and hope for a team we can be proud of.

  • Every one commenting on the performance of Super Eagles match against Serbia should realize that the coach is still on trial if all the players that were just brought together that are yet to play together and master themselves very well. With the performance of the coach during qualifying stage, there is no doubt that he would be able to prepare the players and come out with a strong team before the commencement of the world cup. Also take note that some of our key players we already know were absent when those goals were scored. Up Nigeria, Up Super Eagles
