In-form Chukwueze Says He’s Ready For Crucial South Africa Clash

Villarreal teenage sensation Samuel Chukwueze has fired a subtly warning to South Africa ahead of their crucial African Cup of Nations clash with Nigeria at the FNB Stadium in Johannesburg on Saturday.

The in-form 19-year-old has been called up to bolster the Super Eagles attack thanks to his impressive performance for the Yellow Submarines which has seen him cement his place in the team’s starting line-up after being promoted from the ‘B’ team.

Speaking in Asaba before the team departed South Africa, the former Arsenal target expressed his delight for the opportunity to play for the Super Eagles and vowed to give his best if called upon by coach Genort Rohr to ensure Nigeria book the group’s sole ticket to the 2019 AFCON holding in Cameroon.

He said: “I’m very happy to be called up to represent my country, it’s a very big honour and I thank the coach for believing in me. I feel at home in the team and it’s great to have my friends from the Golden Eaglets Victor (Osimhen) also in the squad.

“I know the match is a very crucial one against a tough side, but we’re also a very strong team so I believe we can get the needed result.

“The most important thing is for the team to win and to make our country proud but if I get the opportunity I’ll do my best just like I’ve been doing at my club to help Nigeria qualify,” Chukwueze concluded.

Chukwueze is a former junior international who alonside Kelechi Nwakali and Victor Osimhen helped Nigeria win the 2015 U17 World Cup in Chile where he bagged the Bronze Boot.

The 19-year-old Nigerian is not shy to get on the ball as the stats show from his first two games in La Liga, firing off a total of 10 shots and completing five of his 10 dribble attempts.

Chukwueze – who almost joined Arsenal in 2016 – has scored twice in six games this season, including his first La Liga goal last weekend against Rayo Vallecano which he described as “an unforgettable moment for my career”.

  • Our coaches should stop being lazy and cast our goalkeeper search net wider. Why must we always get stuck with some select few?
The following goalkeepers deserve a look-in: Sebastian Osigwe of FC Kriens,Switzerland; Gavin Bazunu of Shamrock Rovers(we’ve got to snatch him up ASAP); David Nwolokor(the most consistent Nigerian goalkeeper in Europe over the past two seasons) of FC Sered,Slovakia; Author Okonkwo of Arsenal; Maduka Okoye of Fortuna Dusseldorf, Germany; Dele Alampasu of Fereinse,Portugal; Udoh Akpan of Bnei Shakhin,Isreal etc.
We need to start integrating these young goalkeepers and others into the Super Eagles fold else we might experience a goalkeeper crisis when the likes of Ezenwa(31 years old), Akpeyi(32 years old) and Afelokhai(31 years old) hang their gloves soonest.

Thank you my brother. May you walk and never stumble. Let some people here continue to yell about inviting over thirty goalkeepers to come and debut in d national team when we have a glut of younger ones who should be groomed into d futhere. I don’t understand why we are habouring so many 30+ year old goalies in the SE. We don’t need more than one. The remaining ones should be young ones that can still guarantee us another 10yrs of active service. Not the ones that will start heading down the hill after 2 years and then we start the whole process of searching for a substantive goalkeeper again. This next friendly against Uganda and the last qualifier against Seychelles are suppose to be used to give exposure and game time to a younger goalie…. But now we gonna be wasting the two matches on either a 32 year old 3rd choice or a 31year old debutante.
The goal keeping department is one in which sometimes you need to give the new goalie at least 5 attempts to prove himself before you can make a completely broad judgement of his abilities. Unfortunately, 5 low pressure non competitive matches that can be used to experiment is hardly available in a calender year and that is why it pains me that the next two matches are going to be wasted on goalkeepers that will not be in our Olympic squad in 2020 & world cup squad in 2022

  • I hope the team don’t get too fatigued. They spent too much time flying to Luanda before connecting to Jo’burg and arriving Friday morning. Rohr obviously wasn’t pleased about that and I hope the team shakes off any form of tiredness.
