Reigning two-time Copa America champions Chile, beat European champions Portugal 3-0 on penalties after regulation time ended goalless to book their place in the final of the 2017 FIFA Confederations Cup – Russia 2017, at the Kazan Arena in their debut appearance in the tournament, reports Completesportsnigeria.com.
Portugal's Ricardo Quaresma, Joa Moutinho and Nani all saw their spot-kicks saved by Claudio Bravo while Arturo Vidal, Charles Aranguiz and Alexis Sanchez all converted their kicks for Chile to become the third South American team to reach the final after Brazil and Argentina.
Chile will face the winner of the game involving Germany and Mexico on Thursday come on Sunday.
Chile could have wrapped the game up in the second half of extra time with Arturo Vidal and Martin Rodriguez crashing the wood work in quick successions.
After a bright start from Portugal, the game got a couple resolute defending from both sides with Cristiano Ronaldo and Alexis Sanchez failing to make the breakthrough.
Alexis Sanchez had an off night until the extra time, partly due to been starved of service. The Arsenal forward had to drop too deep to get himself involved as Chilean attack.
Ronaldo saw more of the ball than Sanchez, but neither of them stamped their authority on the game which had few chances at goal.
With five minutes into the break, Chile did more of the pressing but both sides seem at ease in defence.
In the second half, Vidal had a chance to open scoring in the 47th minute but the Bayern Munich star could not keep his effort down from a left flank cross in the cagey affair.
With ten minutes left to play in the second half, coach both sides were cautious which forced the game into extra time.
Chile had chances but failed to convert them but ultimately scored from the spot to seal a remarkable victory for the La Roja.
