Congo 0- 2 Nigeria: Super Eagles Rekindle AFCON Hopes

The race for the 2015 African Cup of Nations for Nigeria was on Saturday brightened as the Super Eagles secured a 2-0 win against the Red Devils of Congo in Pointe Noire.

Ikechukwu Uche, who is making a welcome return to the Eagles fold, converted a penalty in the 57th minute of the game after Emmanuel Emenike, who received a key pass from John Mikel Obi was fouled in the box.

Midfielder Hope Akpan who won a lot of balls in midfield was substituted after suffering from a shoulder injury and replaced by Sone Aluko.

Congo despite playing cautiously and resorting to counter attacks had some good spells in the game with Thievy Bifouma and Fode Dore causing countless worries for the Eagles’ backline.

Vincent Enyeama saved a 65th minute penalty as Godfrey Oboabona was yellow-carded for a hand ball. Replay howevershowed the referee was WRONG.

Mikel Obi controlled brilliantly and sent it forward in the 76th minute but Aluko’s shot after receiving the ball is wide and tame.Uche’s effort two minutes later is a bit too high after a cross from a sprinting Aaron Samuel.

The wave of Nigerian attacks continued but Ahmed Musa loses the ball after a slalom run with eleven minutes left on the clock, Uche with a key pass to him in that situation.

Congo wasted a golden chance to restore parity with a defender shooting wide to the relief of the pensive Nigerian bench.

Aaron Samuel scores Nigeria’s decisive second goal on the 90th minute, deftly placing the ball beyond the Congo keeper with his left foot.

The Super Eagles’ lead caused pandemonium in the stands as restive Congo fans threw objects unto the pitch which caused the game to be temporarily halted.

The Eagles’ defence held on stoutly after the referee had added after eleven minutes was added after 90
minutes.

Earlier in the day, South Africa booked their spot in Equatorial Guinea 2015 with a 2-1 win over Sudan, a
befitting victory in memory of the late keeper, Senzo Meyiwa.

Nigeria will join the Bafana Bafana in booking a ticket to the Nations Cup where they will defend their 2013 title with a win over the South Africans on Wednesday.

Ikpeba criticized Keshi for inviting Aaron Samuel because he plays in China, today Aaron has proving that he’s better than some of those guys in Monaco and bench warmers in Dortmund. Congrats Super eagles! Just keep your head up.

In sports etc it doesn’t necessarily matter where you ply your trade.
In so much as you have the talent and potential to demonstrate the trust and confidence vested on you by your coach, the sky will always be your limit and just like the old axiom goes., every eating proof is always in the eating.
Best of luck Aaron Samuel and Ike Uche and the entire SUper Eagles.
    More grease to your elbow!

  • Good job guys, keep the flag flying

Where is Victor Ikpeba? I hope he has been watching Aaron Samuel. He championed the campaign for Stephen Keshi’s sack for inviting what he called rookies to the national team. He made reference to China based Aaron Samuel. The guy has now scored 2 goals in two appearances for Nigeria after coming in as substitute. People like Victor Ikpeba should be chased out of glass house. We have had enough of their distraction. Up super eagles, up Nigeria.

This is really interesting, is china leagues really bad to that extent?. Well, thank you Aaron samuel for the fruition.

People should leave Ikpeba alone if he don’t criticized then how can the China guy proof himself? When the whole Nigerian criticized the super eagles in 2013 AFCON then that made them step up their game and won the cup. Sometime criticized made someone correct his mistake, please leave IKPEBA alone for peace.

keshi dont deserve to coach nigeria. Keshi is a wrong coach for nigeria. Too sturbon, hate correction, he was just lucky to won the match

That was a brilliant performance by the super Eagle. This guys should be supported and encourage to clinch to ticket instead of talking them down. Up super Eagle.

Where is soccer in Nigeria and co, they have not commented because Keshi did not lose, if he had lost they will be the first to comment and criticize. They said Keshi is not Claude Leroy’s match when it comes to tactics and experience in coaching because Keshi lost to him team in Nigeria, yesterday Keshi defeated him and weep him like a baby in his backyard 2-0. Sometimes football can be funny so let us know how we talk. I pray that Keshi qualifies the team and resign.

      @Marsh
I am here, and I am happy just like you that Nigeria won the game. FYI the reason for criticizing the team is bcoz of the poor performances(Nigeria played very poorly in the first 3 games of the qualifiers), not because I dont want to see the team succeed. Congrats to the Super Eagles.

The Nigerians who critisize Keshi and the team do so because they want to see improved and strong performances, not because they hate Keshi.

@SoccerInNigeria, i am glad to hear from you, like i always say here that Super eagles is our team and we must learn how to support them even in bad times. They have criticized Keshi, they should also criticize NFF to recall Okpala back to the team if they want to see progress. Keshi and Okpala’s combination works so well.
