Croatia Coach Lambastes Japanese Ref For Dubious Penalty

Croatia Head Coach Niko Kovač was furious after his side conceded a controversial penalty in their 3-1 defeat to Brazil at the 2014 FIFA World Cup.

With the tie at 1-1, Japanese referee Yuichi Nishimura handed the Seleção a dubious spot-kick, when Fred fell under minimal contact from defender Dejan Lovren.

Speaking after the game, Kovač was pleased with his team’s performance, but didn’t hold back in his criticism of the game changing decision.

“If that’s a penalty, then we can just stop playing football right now,” he said, as reported by Football Italia.

“Let’s play basketball instead. It’s shameful. We talk about respect, but there wasn’t any respect for Croatia.

“If that’s how we start the World Cup, then we may as well give up and go home now.

“The players made an excellent impression with their performance and it is an honour to coach them.”
