By Johnny Edward:

Tianjin TEDA suffered their third straight Chinese Super League defeat on Saturday despite having Mikel Obi returning to the starting line-up, reports Completesportsnigeria.com.

The game was Mikel’s 12th CSL game of the season. He has scored only one goal this season, against Guangzhou R&F

Tianjin TEDA lost 2-1 to Chongqing Lifan at the Tianjin Olympic Sports Stadium – their sixth loss of the campaign. The win was also Chongqing Lifan’s first in six CSL league games.

Alan Karde’s first half brace gave Chongqing Lifan a 2-1 win in the encounter.

Kardec opened scoring in the 10th minute for Chongqing Lifan before parity was restored by Jiakang Hui for Tianjin TEDA.

Hui’s fired in a 30 yard screamer past the goalkeeper from outside in the 33rd minute before Kardec restored Chongqing Lifan’ s lead in additional time of the first half.

  • I think we can still get 1 more tournament out of Mikel so, I will voice my opinion for the ex-Chelsea midfielder to keep any talk of retirement on ice until at least after next year’s Afcon in Cameroon.

It is not my place to suggest what Mikel does after football but like Gareth Southgate and the late S. Keshi, Eguavoen, Siasia, C. Chukwu, I will suggest Mikel strongly considers coaching his country one day.

I believe he has the people skills, level head, resilience, broad mind, football sense and patriotism to led his country to greatness as a coach someday.

When he does hang his national team boots, Mikel is expected to retire as a Nigeria legend, not so much for his achievements in the field of play (which has been characterised by inconsistent displays) but for how he has carried himself as a leader and his 100% commitment to the cause over a period of few ups and many downs for the Super Eagles.
