–Over World Cup ticket, charges team to win trophy

Sports Minister and Chairman, National Sports Commission, Dr. Tammy Danagogo has congratulated the national senior women’s football team, the Super Falcons for qualifying for the final of the 2014 African Women’s Championship and picking a ticket for the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup holding in Canada.

The Falcons Wednesday defeated the Banyana Banyana of South Africa 2-1 in the first semi final match in Windhoek, Namibia with both of their goals coming from the U-20 most valuable player and top scorer, Asisat Oshoala.

While congratulating the Edwin Okon-handles team, Dr. Danagogo charged them to remain focused and continue with the winning mentality until the trophy is finally won on Saturday against Cameroon who also edged out Cote d’Ivoire by the same score line in the second semi final game.

“The girls have done the country proud and I commend them first for picking one of the tickets for the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup and then for reaching the final of the African Championship. I urge them to remain focused for the final match so as to reclaim the title they lost two years ago,” the minister said.

He added that “I’ll be joining the team in Namibia to take Mr. President’s word of encouragement and support to them. Mr. President has assured that he is waiting to receive and reward them when they win the trophy like he has always done for our athletes who bring honour to our country.”

The Falcons have won six out of the previous seven editions of the competition which began in 1998. They lost the title in 2012 to host, Equatorial Guinea but have qualified for every edition of the FIFA Women’s World Cup since its inception in 1999.
