Denmark’s Coach: Football Is Brutal, Our Three Best Penalty-takers All Missed Vs Croatia

By James Agberebi:

Denmark coach Age Hareide has expressed his disappointment that the effort of his team was not enough to see them through into the quarter-finals of this year’s FIFA World Cup after they lost on penalties to Croatia on Sunday.

After regulation time ended 1-1, the game went into penalty shoot-out with Croatia triumphing 4-3 despite Kasper Schmeichel making two saves. He also stopped Luka Modric’s spot kick with four minutes remaining in extra-time.

However, Croatia’s keeper Danijel Subasic was the hero as he stopped three spot kicks to help his side into the last eight. Among the Danish players whose kick was saved by Subasic was Tottenham Hotspur’s Christian Erikson who was the first player to miss for Denmark.

“Our three best players for penalties all missed their penalties today,” Hareide said in his post-match press conference.

“I feel sorry for Kasper and the whole team. But that is what can happen in penalties, and is the brutality of football.

“Croatia are the best team in Europe for counter-attacks. Having control was important and I thought we had that in the second half.”
