=Goalkeeper Faryd Mondragon became the oldest player in FIFA World Cup history at the age of 43 years and three days, surpassing the record of 42 years and 39 days set by Cameroon’s Roger Milla in 1994. Mondragon also established a new benchmark for the longest gap between successive appearances in the tournament, having played his last match on 26 June 1998. The previous record of 12 years and 13 days was set by Switzerland’s Albert Bickel between 1938 and 1950.

=Colombia netted four goals in a World Cup match for the second time, having drawn 4-4 with Soviet Union in 1962. The victory over Japan sent Los Cafeteros through to the knockout phase for the first time since 1990.

=The 4-1 loss to Colombia equalled Japan’s joint-heaviest defeat in the World Cup, which finished with the same scoreline against Brazil in 2006.

=Italy were eliminated at the group stage for the seventh time and the second campaign in a row. The Italians also suffered successive opening-round knockouts in 1950-54 and 1962-66. Furthermore,La Nazionale equalled their lowest-ever goal return of two, which they previously achieved in 1966.

=Against Italy, Oscar Tabarez made his 14th World Cup appearance as a coach and moved up to 12th position in the all-time coaches’ appearance table, level with England’s Walter Winterbottom, Argentine’s Carlos Bilardo and Germany’s Franz Beckenbauer. Tabarez has progressed past the opening round in each of the three editions in which he has participated (1990, 2010 and 2014).

=Greece have reached the second stage for the first time, despite netting only two goals (as in their previous two campaigns). The only team to progress with just a single goal scored after the three group games were Italy in 1970.
