Saturday’s 4-1 defeat against Sporting Kansas City will not be one to remember for the Canadian side but at least their fans had a funny moment when forward Bright Dike managed to net in his own shoe after a shot from outside the box. The ball was easily stopped by SKC’s keeper Jon Kempin but Dike’s boot ended up inside the goal in a play that was even applauded by the home crowd.
After being sidelined for a period of six months recovering from an Achilles’ tear, Dike made his return coming on as a substitute in the 78th minute of play with Toronto FC trailing a 4-1 disadvantage. He made a decent effort to try to reduce the deficit but unfortunately his efforts weren’t enough. Toronto FC’s head coach joked on Dike’s ‘goal’.
“It was good for Bright to get on the score sheet and it was nice for the referee in Kansas City to play on as they saw his boot go into the back of the net. That sort of summed up our night, to tell you the truth.”
Before the match the 27-year-old expressed his excitement to play again after a long time of absence via Twitter. ‘Thankful to step into a game after 6 months of busting my butt to get back, got a little taste, now I only want more,’he tweeted.
